Why do empires build walls and fences? Are they for defensive purposes only, to keep the ‘barbarians’ at the gate; or do they also function as complex offensive military structures to subjugate and control the colonized? Are the colonized subjects also capable of erecting barriers to shield themselves from colonial onslaughts? In Empires and Walls Mohammad A. Chaichian meticulously examines the rise and fall of the walls that are no longer around; as well as impending fate of ‘neo-liberal’ barriers that imperial and colonial powers have erected in the new Millennium. Based on four years of extensive historical and field-based research Chaichian provides compelling evidence that regardless of their rationale and functions, walls always signal the fading power of an empire.

Columns, walls and floors make up the skeleton of nearly every building. This third volume in the series Scale, Support Materialise, takes an in-depth look at these load-bearing structures, covering the development and realization of appropriate constructions from idea and design intention all the way to constructional implementation.

On occasion of the International Architecture Exhibition in Venice Rem Koolhaas wrote the book 'Elements of Architecture'. As a follow-up to S,M,L,XL this encyclopedic tome illustrates the research project lying behind the 14th International Architecture Biennale. The focus of the book 'Elements of Architecture' is the evolution of the elements used by architects of every age throughout the history of architecture. Doors, windows, ceilings, floors, stairs, balconies, and other basic elements of architecture - often overlooked but universally familiar - are studied, analyzed, and cataloged by means of an endless variety of visual references, from ancient times to modern developments. By looking at the evolution of architectural elements that are common to all cultures, this exploration avoids the classical Eurocentrism that often still characterizes architectural discourse. National identity has seemingly been sacrificed to modernity. Nevertheless, unique national features and mentalities continue to exist and flourish just as international collaboration and exchange intensifies.
