This book collects the lectures given in the framework of the I Academic Conference of the Master's Degree in Linguistics. The proposal of this volume is to begin to trace a journey through the different theoretical orientations of the discipline that have taken place in the national territory and to raise a state of the question, thus aiming at reflection on the theoretical, methodological bases and experiences concrete that have shaped the panorama of linguistics in Argentina. For this, we have the collaboration of different specialists who, in the collected works, draw the first points on the proposed map.

Reflections on translation activity and its results have historically been marked by a greater or lesser distance from the original work. Also over time an attempt has been made to answer the question, what is a good translation? with the formulation of general rules, that is, prescribing. Fortunately, towards the middle of the 20th century, the study of translation activity began to be systematized and the complexity that underpinned it was understood, since various aspects, both linguistic and cognitive, cultural or comparative, converged. From then on, studies on translation abandon the prescription and assume a descriptive and explanatory look, which is related to the norms of the discursive genre that is translated. with the social norms of the public for whom it is translated and with those established between the publisher or client and the translator. From the apparently naive definitions of translation, passing through a historical clipping of the evolution of its study, this book covers the relationship between linguistics and translation, discusses the evolution of the concepts of translation unit and equivalence, exposes the problematization of meaning in the lexicology and terminology, which are fields related to translation, and introduces the relationship between culture and translation.

In the past few decades the use of increasingly large text corpora has grown rapidly in language and linguistics research. This was enabled by remarkable strides in natural language processing (NLP) technology, technology that enables computers to automatically and efficiently process, annotate and analyze large amounts of spoken and written text in linguistically and/or pragmatically meaningful ways. It has become more desirable than ever before for language and linguistics researchers who use corpora in their research to gain an adequate understanding of the relevant NLP technology to take full advantage of its capabilities. This volume provides language and linguistics researchers with an accessible introduction to the state-of-the-art NLP technology that facilitates automatic annotation and analysis of large text corpora at both shallow and deep linguistic levels. The book covers a wide range of computational tools for lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and discourse analysis, together with detailed instructions on how to obtain, install and use each tool in different operating systems and platforms. The book illustrates how NLP technology has been applied in recent corpus-based language studies and suggests effective ways to better integrate such technology in future corpus linguistics research. This book provides language and linguistics researchers with a valuable reference for corpus annotation and analysis. .

This book examines the question of whether languages can differ in grammatical complexity and, if so, how relative complexity differences might be measured. Chapters approach the question from the point of view of formal grammatical theory, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics, and take phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics into account.
