The surgical treatment of hernia requires an extensive knowledge and technical ability. Astley Cooper stated that no disease of surgical interest requires so broad skills and knowledge as hernia and its variants. The history of groin hernia repair evolved from life-saving procedures (such as for incarcerated hernias) to elective operations performed as day-surgery procedure. The present book is designed to focus on specific topics and problems which a general surgeon dealing with groin hernia is very likely to face during his practice. Its aim is to provide the readers with informative and practical indications to understand, diagnose, and manage patients presenting these situations. It could hopefully stimulate further innovative studies and techniques suitable for treatment of these patients.

Surgery: An Introductory Guide is an all-in-one reference that provides the vital information needed to get the best learning experience out of an operation, and presents it in a convenient, efficient, and portable format. Each section brings together the key points from several different fields including anatomy, pathophysiology, radiology, surgical technique, and clinical guidelines. The operations covered represent the breadth of general surgery including hernia repair, cholecystectomy, breast surgery, general bowel surgery, and vascular surgery. Each chapter provides informative text, bulleted lists, and common OR questions, combined with classic radiology images, diagrams, and a color illustration of the operative anatomy. This method of using key words, high-yield diagrams, and illustrations enhances the ability to quickly absorb and retain the relevant information. The volume is also organized by operation rather than by pathological topic, which lends itself to quick review before each case. Written by Dr. Sarpel, a surgeon and former co-clerkship director who has been honored with multiple teaching awards, Surgery: An Introductory Guide is of great value to medical students and junior residents rotating on general surgery. .

With an increase in the use of laparoscopic techniques for the treatment of abdominal wall hernias, this comprehensive book provides a detailed description of the most up-to-date techniques used in the laparoscopic repair of inguinal and ventral incisional hernias. Advances in Laparoscopy of the Abdominal Wall Hernia takes the reader step-by-step through two laparoscopic techniques used in inguinal hernia correction: Extraperitoneal (TEP) and Transabdominal (TAPP), and guides the reader through the fundamentals of ventral hernia repair. The authors aim to show methods of dealing with rarer hernias and those of atypical location. This book will also inform the reader of the various kinds of meshes used and provides knowledge on how to fix them, as well as the advantages, disadvantages and indications of this type of prosthesis. Written by experts in the field, Advances in Laparoscopy of the Abdominal Wall Hernia is a valuable reference tool to surgeons and medical practitioners working in this field.

Minimally or noninvasive surgical techniques have profoundly changed the way surgeons operate today. The possibility of offering the patient a selection of spinal surgical procedures, based on mediating the consequences of surgery while maximizing the results of the procedure has resulted in a growing interest in minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS). MISS is a multidisciplinary subject involving the orthopedic surgeon, neurosurgeon, radiologists, anesthesiologists and pain management specialists, each of which needs to act in unison to maximize the benefit to the patient. Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Lumbar Spine represents the first multidisciplinary review of the topic in which the focus is on the management of the patient throughout the perioperative period. The Editor and his carefully selected group of Contributors focus on correct diagnoses using the most appropriate imaging. The book reviews anesthesiology techniques, the optimal minimally invasive approach, treatment of lumbar disc herniation and degenerative disc disease, and the most advanced applications of robotic surgery. It will therefore be vital reading for all spinal orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, pain management specialists, anesthesiologists, and interventional radiologists involved in the management of patients who would benefit from MISS procedures.

Sports hernias are an increasingly recognized problem in athletics, presenting a challenge for team physicians and other health care providers regarding their diagnosis and management. Confusion is magnified by the various treatment methods that exist, both surgical and non-surgical. Sports Hernia and Athletic Pubalgia is the first text devoted solely to the topic of sports hernia and will examine its etiology and diagnosis, as well as how to differentiate it from other problems involving the athlete’s hip area and other injuries it often correlates and interacts with, such as femoroacetabular impingement. It covers all current approaches to treatment, from open approaches to minimally invasive approaches, and discusses rehabilitation and return to play. Comprised of contributions from an international array of expert clinicians and thought leaders, this is the immediate authoritative book on the subject of sports hernias.

The intervertebral disc is composed of a complex tissue that separates neighboring vertebrae, permits a wide range of motion, and cushions the high biomechanical forces on the spine. Disc degeneration leads to a loss of function and is often associated with excruciating pain. Written by leading scientists and clinicians, this is the only book in the past fifty years devoted entirely to the study of the intervertebral disc. The first part of the book provides a review of the basic biology of the disc in health and disease. The second part considers strategies for mitigating the effects of disc degeneration and discusses the possibility of engineering replacement tissues. The final section is dedicated to approaches that model normal development, and the elucidation of the pathogenesis of degenerative disc disease using animal, organ and cell culture techniques. This unique and authoritative book bridges the gap between the basic and clinical sciences; its target audience includes basic scientists, orthopedists, neurologists, rehabilitation and physical therapists, primary care physicians and chiropractors, while it also addresses the needs of graduate students, medical students, interns, fellows, and patients who suffer from disc-related pathologies.
