Abstract

Abstract

This illustrated three-volume catalogue of the works of painter & engraver William Hogarth was the result of 'Hogarthomania', the enthusiasm for all his productions which arose soon after his death. The publisher & author John Nichols, assisted by the collector & literary critic George Steevens, published a life of Hogarth & a list of his works in 1781, & as disputes increasingly arose over the genuineness of some of the prints attributed to him, enlarged versions appeared in 1782 & 1785. This work, published between 1808 & 1817, is the last in the sequence of Nichols' works on Hogarth, & remains a useful source for art historians & anyone interested in the cultural life of the eighteenth century. Volume 3, published seven years after Volume 2, contains further plates, critical essays, & a 'key' to the scenes in Hogarth's prints allegedly derived from classical sources.

Abstract

"In a series of revolts starting in 1820, four military officers rode forth on horseback from obscure European towns to bring political freedom and a constitution to Spain, Naples, and Russia; and national independence to the Greeks. The men who launched these exploits from Andalusia to the snowy fields of Ukraine--Colonel Rafael del Riego, General Guglielmo Pepe, General Alexandros Ypsilanti, and Colonel Sergei Muraviev-Apostol--all hoped to overturn the old order. Over the next six years, their revolutions ended in failure. The men who led them became martyrs. In The Four Horsemen, the late, eminent historian Richard Stites offers a compelling narrative history of these four revolutions. Stites sets the stories side by side, allowing him to compare events and movements and so illuminate such topics as the transfer of ideas and peoples across frontiers, the formation of an international community of revolutionaries, and the appropriation of Christian symbols and language for secular purposes. He shows how expressive behavior and artifacts of all kinds--art, popular festivities, propaganda, and religion--worked their way to various degrees into all the revolutionary movements and regimes. And he documents as well the corruption, abandonment of liberal values, and outright betrayal of the revolution that emerged in Spain and Naples; the clash of ambitions and ideas that wracked the unity of the Decembrists' cause; and civil war that erupted in the midst of the Greek struggle for independence. Richard Stites was one of the most imaginative and broad-ranging historians working in the United States. This book is his last work, a classic example of his dazzling knowledge and idiosyncratic yet accessible writing style. The culmination of an esteemed career, The Four Horsemen promises to enthrall anyone interested in nineteenth-century Europe and the history of revolutions"--

Abstract

This fifth book on Hegel assesses the consequences of Hegelian thought for spirituality. The fourth title in this series, Hegel's Philosophy of Universal Reconciliation (CSP 2013), recalled the more explicit phrase, "to restore all things in Christ", identifying the universal with the particular and, finally, the individual. This concreteness is the true universal. The "double negation", "The Orthodox Hegel", shows how the Christian movement, obliged by its own momentum to recognise its spiri.

Abstract

There has been an intensive debate in recent years, particularly in political philosophy, on how the concept of recognition ( Anerkennung) can bring insight into understanding social and political relationships and answering ethical questions. Proponents of this philosophy seek to apply German Idealism, especially Hegel, to the arguments of recognition in order to solve contemporary problems. However, does the present debate incorporate sufficiently the requirements of the idealist philosophy which it pretends to inherit and update? As a new paradigm for philosophy claiming to actualize German idealist philosophy, it provokes questions about the foundation of the principle of recognition itself as well as about which philosophical method provides the best means for addressing recognition. In Recognition -- German Idealism as an Ongoing Challenge , renowned authors address this fascinating and far-reaching questions in discussion with Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel. Abstract

In Ockham’s Assumption of Mental Speech: Thinking in a World of Particulars , Sonja Schierbaum advances a detailed philosophical reconstruction of William Ockham’s (1287-1349) conception of mental speech. Ockham’s conception provides a rich account of cognition and semantics that binds together various philosophical issues and forms a point of departure for many later and even contemporary debates. The book analyses the role of mental speech for the semantics and the use of linguistic expressions as well as its function within Ockham’s cognitive theory and epistemology. Carefully balancing Ockham’s position against contemporary appropriations in the light of Fodor’s LOTH, it allows us to understand better Ockham’s view on human thought and its relation to language.

Abstract

Abstract

The structure of common law has for many years been the subject of intense debate between formalists and functionalists. The former, drawing on legal realism, proposes that transactional law is a private law for interacting parties, while the later, inspired by Kant, argue it is a public law serving the collective ends of society. But what if there were a unity between functionalism and formalism? What if, in this unity, private law is modfied by a common good? In this thoroughly revised and re-written edition of his classic book 'The Unity of the Common-Law: Studies in Hegelian Jurisprudence,

Abstract

Tragedy plays a central role in Hegel's early writings on theology and politics. Hegel's overarching aim in these texts is to determine the kind of mythology that would best complement religious and political freedom in modernity. Peter Wake claims that, for Hegel at this early stage, ancient Greek tragedy provided the model for such a mythology and suggested a way to oppose the rigid hierarchies and authoritarianism that characterized Europe of his day. Wake follows Hegel as he develops his idea of the essence of Christianity and its relation to the distinctly tragic expression of beauty
