The subject of power electronics is concerned with solid state devices for the control and conversion of electrical power. These silicon devices are designed mainly for switching the transfer current from one part of an electrical circuit to another. Power electronics has a wide range of applications from the small systems used in electrical appliances to very large systems for the supply and distribution of electricity. Although it can be difficult to completely define where the boundary lies between electronics and power electronics, this resource succeeds at breaking down the discipline. Containing the useful concepts and building blocks that go into making a power converter operate successfully, this book provides a description of the characteristics of different types of power semiconductor devices and their application to power converter circuits. Applications to power transmission, electric drives, and medical equipment are included to illustrate the wide range of power electronics in both small and high power circuits.

This book reports on various techniques for fault location on crossbonded cables, identifies the best method and describes the construction of a full fault locator system. The developed system is able of pinpointing the fault location on long cross-bonded cable systems and will be installed in Danish substations for monitoring the coming cable-based transmission grid. The work was conducted as part of a collaborative project between the department of energy technology at Aalborg University and the Danish transmission system operator for electricity and natural gas, Energinet.dk. .

This book provides a rigorous framework in which to study problems in the analysis, stability and design of networked control systems. Four dominant sources of difficulty are considered: packet dropouts, communication bandwidth constraints, parametric uncertainty, and time delays. Past methods and results are reviewed from a contemporary perspective, present trends are examined, and future possibilities proposed. Emphasis is placed on robust and reliable design methods. New control strategies for improving the efficiency of sensor data processing and reducing associated time delay are presented. The coverage provided features: · an overall assessment of recent and current fault-tolerant control algorithms; · treatment of several issues arising at the junction of control and communications; · key concepts followed by their proofs and efficient computational methods for their implementation; and · simulation examples (including TrueTime simulations) to provide hands-on experience. In addition to the theoretical coverage, the author describes a number of applications that demonstrate the real-world relevance of this material, and these include: · a servo system; · a triple inverted pendulum; · power system control; · wireless control of a cart with inverted pendulum and wireless servo application with emphasis on controller area networks; and · switched ethernet and wireless area networks. Researchers and graduate students working in networked and distributed control will find this text a useful guide in avoiding and ameliorating common and serious problems with these systems. The increasing prevalence of networks in many fields of engineering will make Control and Estimation Methods over Communication Networks of interest to practitioners with backgrounds in communications, process engineering, robotics, power, automotive and other areas.

This text seeks to illuminate, mainly for the electrical power engineers of the future, the topic of large scale solar flux gathering schemes, which arguably represent the major source of renewable power available. The aim of the content is to impart, from an electromagnetic perspective, a deep and sound understanding of the topic of solar flux collection, ranging from the characteristics of light to the properties of antennas. To do this five chapters are employed to provide a thorough grounding in relevant aspects of electromagnetism and electromagnetic waves including optics, electromagnetic radiation and reception, aperture antennas and array antennas, and the quantum electrodynamics aspects of optical absorption, as it relates to photovoltaic techniques. The principles developed in these chapters are then used to underpin and elucidate the main chapters on photovoltaic collectors, concentrated solar power collectors, satellite based collection systems and optical nantennas. To establish the novel and transformative renewable technologies, which civilisation will soon require, in order to achieve sustainability quickly and effectively, the availability of professional engineers and scientists with a thorough and commanding grasp of the fundamental science is an absolutely essential prerequisite. This book provides this for solar power generating systems.

Servo Motors and Industrial Control Theory is the only text focused on the fundamentals of servo motors and control theory. Graphical methods for classical control theory have been augmented with worked examples using MatLab and Mathcad to reflect the reality of the way engineers solve control problems in the field today. State variable feedback control theory is introduced clearly and simply, with practical examples that help students approach what can be seen as complicated problems with confidence. This updated second edition includes expanded discussion of Nyquist and Root Locus stability criteria and the role of sensors, as well as new Mathcad examples. A range of parameters are introduced for each servo control system discussed, making this book a comprehensive learning tool for students and an accessible information resource for control system designers who want to keep their knowledge up-to-date.

Previously limited to heavy and bulky lead-acid storage batteries, large format batteries were used only where absolutely necessary as a means of energy storage. The improved energy density, cycle life, power capability, and durability of lithium ion cells has given us electric and hybrid vehicles with meaningful driving range and performance, grid-tied energy storage systems for integration of renewable energy and load leveling, backup power systems and other applications. This book discusses battery management system (BMS) technology for large format lithium-ion battery packs from a systems perspective. It covers the future of BMS; provides new ways to generate, use, and store energy; free us from the perils of non-renewable energy sources; provides a full update on BMS technology, covering software, hardware, integration, testing, and safety. --

The book summarizes and compares recent advancements in the development of novel lateral power transistors (LDMOS devices) for integrated circuits in power electronic applications. In its first part, the book motivates the necessity for lateral power transistors by a top-down approach: First, it presents typical energy conversion applications in modern industrial, automotive and consumer electronics. Next, it introduces common circuit topologies suitable for these applications, and discusses the feasibility for monolithic integration. Finally, the combination of power and logic functionality on a single chip is motivated and the requirements and limitations for the power semiconductor devices are deduced. The second part describes the evolution of lateral power transistors over the past decades from the simple pin-type concept to double-acting RESURF topologies. It describes the principle of operation for these LDMOS devices and discusses limitations of lateral power devices. Moreover, figures-of-merit are presented which can be used to evaluate the performance of the novel lateral power transistors described in this book with respect to the LDMOS devices. In the last part, [..] the fundamental physical concepts including charge compensation and trench gate topologies are discussed. Also, the status of research in LDMOS devices on silicon carbide is presented. Advantages and drawbacks for each of these integration approaches are summarized, and the feasibility with respect to power electronic applications is evaluated.
