This book defines the field of social capital and health. The purpose of this book is to show the growth in the field of social capital and health and to expose readers to a variety of approaches in order to think about and model the question of how health can be improved by investments in community social capital as well as by indivi

"Management Accounting in Health Care Organizations, Third Edition, focuses on the application of key managerial accounting tools and concepts introduced. Topics include full costing, incremental costing, activity based costing and responsibility accounting. The book focuses upon both analytics and communication skills. Tools and frameworks for financial decision support and decision-making processes are provided, as are tools and models for evaluating and reviewing long- and short-term resource allocation decisions. Esoteric and non-health care specific content have been removed, as well as most cases, allowing room for a much needed new chapter (Chapter One, The Context For Management Accounting In Health Care) and a newly combined but shorter chapter on Aborption-Costing and Activity-Based Accounting. New to this edition is expanded content on the specific role of management accounting in health care, activity-based costing, impact of Affordable Care Act, and much more detail operational budgeting. The book is an ideal way to help students learn to identify, define, discuss and apply key health care management accounting concepts. The book includes one practice case, with optional cases posted online for instructors to select, along with teaching notes for the cases. Each chapter includes learning objectives, standard introductions, and key terms."--

"Most people would agree that the healthcare system in the United States is a mess. Healthcare accounts for a larger percentage of gross domestic product in the United States than in any other industrialized nation, but health outcomes do not reflect this enormous investment. In this book, Philip Rosoff offers a provocative proposal for providing quality healthcare to all Americans and controlling the out-of-control costs that threaten the economy. He argues that rationing--often associated in the public's mind with such negatives as unplugging ventilators, death panels, and socialized medicine--is not a dirty word. A comprehensive, centralized, and fair system of rationing is the best way to distribute the benefits of modern medicine equitably while achieving significant cost savings. Rosoff points out that certain forms of rationing already exist when resources are scarce and demand high: the organ transplant system, for example, and the distribution of drugs during a shortage. He argues that if we incorporate certain key features from these systems, healthcare rationing would be fair--and acceptable politically. Rosoff considers such topics as fairness, decisions about which benefits should be subject to rationing, and whether to compensate those who are denied scarce resources. Finally, he offers a detailed discussion of what an effective and equitable healthcare rationing system would look like."--Provided by publisher.

Health spending continues to grow faster than the economy in most OECD countries. In 2010, the OECD published a study of strategies to increase value for money in health care, in which pay for performance (P4P) was identified as an innovative tool to improve health system efficiency in several OECD countries.

This book reviews and defines the current state of the art for informatics education in medicine and health care. This field has undergone considerable change as the field of informatics itself has evolved. Twenty years ago almost the only individuals involved in health care who had even heard the term “informatics” were those who identified themselves as medical or nursing informaticians. Today, we have a variety of subfields of informatics including not just medical and nursing informatics, but informatics applied to specific health professions (such as dental or pharmacy informatics), as well as biomedical informatics, bioinformatics and public health informatics. Informatics Education in Health Care addresses the broad range of informatics education programs available today. The Editor and very experienced internationally recognized informatics educators who have contributed to this work have made the tacit knowledge explicit and shared some of the lessons they have learned. This book therefore represents the key reference for all involved in the informatics education whether they be trainers or trainees.

New medical technologies are a leading driver of U.S. health care spending. This report identifies promising policy options to change which medical technologies are created, with two related policy goals: (1) Reduce total health care spending with the smallest possible loss of health benefits, and (2) ensure that new medical products that increase spending are accompanied by health benefits that are worth the spending increases.

The outsourcing of clinical trials to Latin America by the transnational innovative pharmaceutical industry began about twenty years ago. Using archival information and field work in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru, the authors discuss the regulatory contexts and the ethical dimensions of human experimentation in the region. More than 80% of all clinical trials in the region take place in these countries, and the European Medicines Agency has defined them as priority countries in Latin America. The authors raise questions about the quality of data obtained from the trials and the violation of human rights during their implementation. Their findings are presented in this volume, the first in-depth analysis of clinical trials in the region. .
