Abstract

Dieses Buch zeigt, wie das politische und militärische Bündnis zwischen Deutschland und Japan in der NS-Zeit kulturpolitisch flankiert wurde: in der Publizistik mit der Konstruktion vermeintlicher historischer und kultureller Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen beiden Ländern, u.a. zwischen Samurai und SS; mit der Produktion gemeinsamer Filme; mit Auftritten japanischer Künstler in Deutschland und dem Versuch, Elemente japanischer Alltagskultur wie das Go-Spiel in Deutschland heimisch zu machen; ab 1937 mit Austauschprogrammen für Funktionäre von Sport- und anderen Massenorganisationen, für Journalisten, Mediziner und Juristen, vor allem aber für Jugendliche und Studenten, die das deutsch-japanische Bündnis in Zukunft tragen sollten. In Japan warb das neue Deutschland auch mit grossen Ausstellungen für sich und drang mit tatkräftiger Unterstützung der dortigen NS-Organisationen darauf, die wenigen Deutschen jüdischer Herkunft, die an japanischen Hochschulen lehrten, aus ihren Ämtern zu vertreiben. Ab 1938/39 wurden Pläne für eine weitere Intensivierung der Kulturbeziehungen durch die Kriege in Ostasien und Europa obsolet. Dafür versuchten in Deutschland jetzt Publizistik, Filme, Theater, Belletristik und sogar Konzertveranstalter und Komponisten, die Verbundenheit mit Japan lebendig zu erhalten und den Heroismus und Opfergeist japanischer Soldaten als vorbildlich darzustellen. Und noch Ende 1944 wurden bildungspolitische Vorbereitungen für eine von Deutschland und Japan dominierte Nachkriegswelt getroffen. Ein Schlusskapitel beschreibt, wie rasch die Wirkungen der nationalsozialistischen Japan-Propaganda nach 1945 verflogen und was aus ihren Protagonisten wurde.--
