Environmental democracy has several roots and reasons, as well as theoretical foundations, which are taken as a starting point of research in this book. One interpretation of environmental democracy could be that it is a visualization of democratic procedural rights, one of the best options to make environmental rights vital. Usually we take public participation as an integral aspect of environmental democracy, thus the classical three pillars are also discussed - access to information, participation in decision-making, and access to justice - mostly from a European and primarily EU perspective, but the book also has substantial relevance for international law. Concepts, theories, and environmental rights may be valued through their implementation potential, and this forms the largest part of the book: how public participation is implemented in Europe - via the Aarhus Convention, within EU law and practice, and in national law. On the one hand, there are several surveys from Europe, partly thematic (GMO, waste), partly pragmatic (e.g. litigation), while, on the other hand, there are country examples, such as Ireland, as well as a special focus on Hungary - as the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence project, the sponsor of the book, has its center there. Beside special practical examples and even sociological surveys, there is now a unique legal instrument in Hungary which is introduced - that is the ombudsman (now deputy ombudsman) of future generations, the history, concept, and practice of which is discussed in details with many examples.

En 2010, la Stratégie nationale du développement durable (SNDD) n'hésitait pas à rappeler que « l'éducation au développement durable devait préparer le futur citoyen à comprendre, à intégrer la complexité des relations entre le social, l'économique, le culturel et l'environnemental et à agir ». L'éducation au développement durable doit ainsi relever un véritable défi : celui de rendre chacun plus attentif à ce qui l'entoure et plus apte à participer à la vie de la société. Cet ouvrage tend à donner quelques clés pour cerner cette nouvelle forme d'éducation : appréhender les enjeux de société (réchauffement climatique, OGM, gestion de l'eau, préservation de la biodiversité...) via ce que l'on a coutume d'appeler les Questions Socialement Vives (QSV) ; faire le pari de la transdisciplinarité via un raisonnement par la complexité ; recourir à l'analyse systémique ; ne pas se limiter aux seuls piliers économique, social et environnemental du développement durable, y inclure également les dimensions culturelle et de gouvernance ; inscrire le développement durable dans des échelles spatio-temporelles ; associer l'EDD à un ensemble de valeurs, une certaine éthique dont découlent plusieurs principes : le principe de responsabilité, le principe de solidarité, le principe de précaution, le principe de participation... Les enseignants, du fondamental au supérieur, trouveront dans ce livre un cadre conceptuel et épistémologique, différents cadres d'apprentissage ainsi que quelques illustrations de mise en oeuvre de l'éducation au développement durable dans les pays du Sud.
