"The role of women in the Christian Church is the subject of heated debate. In this powerful book Julia Ogilvy interviews twelve of the most notable Christian women of our time, providing a telling and at times shocking analysis of the situation today. The women - from the Dean of York and the Presiding Bishop in America to Helena Kennedy QC and Dr Elaine Storkey - share some of the pain, disappointment and hurt they have experienced and reflect on the impact of a patriarchal Church on the suffering of women across the world. Their stories are very different but they all share a remarkable faith, humility and determination to fulfil their own calling. Each one is an inspiration to women everywhere and provides a unique insight into the role of the leader in any profession. Contributors include: Lucy Winkett, Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Sheila Watson, Vivienne Faull, Jane Williams, Elaine Storkey, Sarah Coakley, Helena Kennedy, Alison Elliot, Tamsin Merchant, Katherine Jefferts Schori, and Chilton Knudsen."--Publisher's description.

Harlot, pious martyr, marriage breaker, obedient sister, prophetess, literate woman, agent of the devil, hypocrite. These are some qualifications of the image of Anabaptist/Mennonite women, from a wide array of perspectives. Over the ages they became both negative and positive stereotypes, created by either opponents or sympathizers, as a means of demonizing or promoting the dissident, radical free church movement. This volume explores the characteristics, backgrounds and effects of the collective perceptions of Anabaptist/Mennonite women, as well as their self-understanding, from the sixteenth into the nineteenth centuries, in a variety of case studies. This is not a gender study in the traditional sense. The theory of imagology sets the stage for the interpretation of the image of the European Mennonite sisters, acting within their religious, moral, cultural and social landscapes of Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, and the Ukraine (tsarist Russia).

The documentary papyri are an unparalleled source for the study of women in antiquity. Among them are numbers of female-authored texts which allow women's voices to be heard. In the period to 400 CE twenty-six of these texts provide information on Christian women's religious lives. This book analyses these papyri. They give insight into Christian women's knowledge and use of biblical texts, their practice of prayer, their theological understanding of God, their lives and relationships. This book also examines texts written to Christian women or referring to Christian women among which are a valuable group referring to ascetic women. The perspectives of the papyri nuance what is known about women from other sources.
