Abstract

This book provides a practical guide to the use and applications of inorganic biomaterials. It begins by introducing the concept of inorganic biomaterials, which includes bioceramics and bioglass. This concept is further extended to hybrid biomaterials consisting of inorganic and organic materials to mimic natural biomaterials. The book goes on to provide the reader with information on biocompatibility, bioactivity and bioresorbability. The concept of the latter is important because of the increasing role resorbable biomaterials are playing in implant applications. The book also introduces a n

Abstract

The second edition of Chitin underscores the important factors for standardizing chitin processing and characterization. It captures the essential interplay between chitin's assets and limitations as a biomaterial, placing the past promises of chitin in perspective, addressing its present realities and offering insight into what is required to realize chitin's destiny (including its derivative, chitosan) as a biomaterial of the twenty-first century. This book is an ideal guide for both industrialists and researchers with a vested interest in commercializing chitin. An upd

Abstract

As society is increasingly concerned with quality of life for an ever-growing elderly population and those with sports and military injuries, greater attention is being paid to managing diseases and pains, as well as treating these populations. Orthopedics and dental implants still face many challenges to facilitate the aged society, in particular, because implant receiving vital hard tissue gradually deteriorates (in the sense of reduced bone density and quality). In addition, special developments in materials, as well as treatment techniques, are urgently needed for dental/medical implant candidates who have already developed serious or lifestyle-related diseases which are contraindicative to implant treatments.

Abstract

The question whether molecular primitives can prove to be real alternatives to contemporary semiconductor means or effective supplements extending greatly possibilities of information technologies is addressed. Molecular primitives and circuitry for information processing devices are also discussed. Investigations in molecular based computing devices were initiated in the early 1970s in the hopes for an increase in the integration level and processing speed. Real progress proved unfeasible into the 1980´s. However, recently, important and promising results were achieved. The elaboration of operational 160-kilobit molecular electronic memory patterned 1011 bits per square centimeter in the end of 90´s were the first timid steps of information processing further development. Subsequent advances beyond these developments are presented and discussed. This work provides useful knowledge to anyone working in molecular based information processing.

Abstract

This volume focuses on latest research in therapeutic devices for cardiovascular, i.e. vascular and valvular, and cardiac diseases. Aspects of vascular therapies covered relate to stent grafts for aortic aneurysms, endovascular stents for percutaneous arterial interventions, and small- to medium-diameter tissue engineered vascular grafts - one of the greatest persisting challenges in cardiovascular therapies. Contributions on valvular therapies focus on prosthetic heart valves with flexible polymeric leaflets and patient-specific simulation for open-heart and percutaneous implantation of aortic biological heart valves including the challenges posed on the prosthesis design. The section on cardiac diseases provides contributions on advances in therapies for myocardial infarction and infarct-induced heart failure, and in vivo biomechanics of implantable cardiac pacemakers.

Abstract

Advances in Calcium Phosphate Biomaterials presents a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the latest advances in developing calcium phosphate biomaterials and their applications in medicine. It covers the fundamental structures, synthesis methods, characterization methods, and the physical and chemical properties of calcium phosphate biomaterials, as well as the synthesis and properties of calcium phosphate-based biomaterials in regenerative medicine and their clinical applications. The book brings together these new concepts, mechanisms and methods in contributions by both young and “veteran” academics, clinicians, and researchers to forward the knowledge and expertise on calcium phosphate and related materials. Accordingly, the book not only covers the fundamentals but also opens new avenues for meeting future challenges in research and clinical applications. Besim Ben-Nissan is a Professor of Chemistry and Forensic Science at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.

Abstract

This book is the first to summarize new technologies for engineered cell manipulation. The contents focus on control of cellular functions by nanomaterials and control of three-dimensional cell–cell interactions. Control of cellular functions is important for cell differentiation, maturation, and activation, which generally are controlled by the addition of soluble cytokines or growth factors into cell culture dishes. Target antigen molecules can be efficiently delivered to the cytosol of the dendritic cells using the nanoparticle technique described here, and cellular functions such as dendritic cell maturation can be controlled easily and with precision. This book describes basic preparation of the nanoparticles, activation control of dendritic cells, immune function control, and in vivo application for various vaccination systems. The second type of control, that of cell–cell interaction, is important for tissue engineering in order to develop three-dimensional cellular constructs. To achieve in vitro engineering of three-dimensional human tissue constructs, cell–cell interaction must be controlled in three dimensions, but typical biological cell manipulation technique cannot accomplish this task. An engineered cell manipulation technique is necessary. In this book the authors describe the fabrication of nanofilms onto cell surfaces, development of three-dimensional cellular multilayers, and various applications of the cellular multilayers as three-dimensional human models. This important work will be highly informative for researchers and students in the fields of materials science, polymer science, biomaterials, medicinal science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and biology.

Abstract

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the Western World and heart failure following a myocardial infarction continues to increase despite urgent revascularization. Cell therapy offered the promise to reverse cardiac injury and prevent heart failure, but the initial clinical trials were not as effective as anticipated. New approaches to restore ventricular function are urgently needed. Cardiac regeneration and repair Volume 2 reviews the use of biomaterials, alone or combined with cell therapy, to provide tissue engineered constructs to repair the injured heart and prevent or reverse h
