Das Phänomen der Vergebung besitzt einen festen Platz in unserer moralischen Lebenswelt. Als endliche Vernunftwesen, die einerseits eine Vielzahl von Bedürfnissen und Interessen haben und andererseits unter dem Anspruch der Moral stehen, werden Menschen immer wieder aneinander schuldig. Das Unrecht und das Leid, das sie dem anderen zufügen – es reicht von alltäglichen Nachlässigkeiten bis zu schweren Verbrechen –, ist Gegenstand des Vergebens. Doch was ist überhaupt Vergebung? Was sind die wesentlichen Merkmale dieses Begriffs? Was genau bewirkt Vergebung? Darf und soll Vergebung überhaupt gewährt werden? Wie ist Vergebung zu rechtfertigen? Wer darf vergeben? Eine Moralphilosophie, welche die conditio humana in ihrer ganzen Breite zu berücksichtigen versucht, muss auch diese Fragen behandeln. So kann sie zur Überwindung von Schuld und zur Wiederherstellung gestörter menschlicher Beziehungen beitragen. Die einzelnen Beiträge des Bandes nehmen zum einen die anglophone Gegenwartsdiskussion auf, die sich vorwiegend an Joseph Butler orientiert, berücksichtigen zum anderen aber auch die historische Dimension des Themas, insbesondere die Antike sowie die moderne Phänomenologie.

For the last thirty years, documented human rights violations have been met with an unprecedented rise in demands for accountability. This trend challenges the use of amnesties which typically foreclose opportunities for criminal prosecutions that some argue are crucial to transitional justice. Recent developments have seen amnesties circumvented, overturned, and resisted by lawyers, states, and judiciaries committed to ending impunity for human rights violations. Yet, despite this global movement, the use of amnesties since the 1970's has not declined. Amnesties, Accountability, and Human Rights examines why and how amnesties persist in the face of mounting pressure to prosecute the perpetrators of human rights violations. Drawing on more than 700 amnesties instituted between 1970 and 2005, Rene Jeffery maps out significant trends in the use of amnesty and offers a historical account of how both the use and the perception of amnesty has changed. As mechanisms to facilitate transitions to democracy, to reconcile divided societies, or to end violent conflicts, amnesties have been adapted to suit the competing demands of contemporary post conflict politics and international accountability norms. Through the history of one evolving political instrument, Amnesties, Accountability, and Human Rights sheds light on the changing thought, practice, and goals of human rights discourse generally.

Het Verdrag inzake de rechten van personen met een handicap van 13 december 2006 (IVRPH) luidt een nieuwe fase in de internationale bescherming van de rechten van de mens in. Het bevat een brede waaier aan rechten die vaak al in andere mensenrechtenverdragen voorkwamen, maar die nu voor het eerst met een specifieke focus op personen met een handicap verenigd zijn in dit ene verdrag. Het is het eerste globale mensenrechtenverdrag dat in dit millennium tot stand kwam in de schoot van de Verenigde Naties. Het Verdrag kondigt een nieuwe aanpak aan ten aanzien van personen met een handicap. De rechten die hierin aan bod komen, zijn erg divers. Zowel rechten die traditioneel worden beschouwd als politieke en burgerlijke rechten, als economische, sociale en culturele rechten komen aan bod in het IVRPH. In dit boek wordt nagegaan welke gevolgen het IVRPH in de Belgische rechtsorde heeft. In de eerste plaats wordt onderzocht in hoeverre individuen zich rechtstreeks op het Verdrag kunnen beroepen voor een Belgische rechter. Waar een rechtstreeks beroep niet mogelijk is, is het belangrijk om te weten te komen wat de indirecte effecten van het Verdrag zouden kunnen zijn in de (sub)nationale rechtsorde. Ten slotte rijst de vraag naar de effecten van het feit dat ook de Unie partij is bij het Verdrag op de situatie in België. Het boek is als volgt opgebouwd. Eerst wordt kort stilgestaan bij de totstandkoming van het Verdrag en vervolgens wordt een algemeen overzicht gegeven van de bestaande technieken van doorwerking. De grootste aandacht gaat naar de economische, sociale en culturele rechten, aangezien er over de doorwerking van deze rechten nog de meeste twijfel bestaat. Daarbij wordt verwezen naar de ervaring met andere verdragen die economische, sociale en culturele rechten bevatten. In dit deel wordt ook al ingezoomd op de doorwerking van het IVRPH zelf. In het derde deel wordt op artikelsgewijze basis een overzicht gegeven van de bepalingen van het IVRPH en hierbij wordt gezocht naar de vormen van doorwerking die kans op slagen hebben. In het laatste deel wordt uitgelegd hoe de Europese Unie, die zelf ook partij is bij het Verdrag, de nationale evoluties kan beïnvloeden

De bestraffing van de collaboratie na de Tweede Wereldoorlog is een van de meest omstreden episodes uit het beglische verleden. CVP-senator Raymond Derine sprak over een "Repressie zonder maat of einde" (1978) en reflecteerde daarmee de in Vlaanderen dominante perceptie van een anti-Vlaamse wraakoefening. Alleen amnestie kon die schande uitwissen. In "Onverwerkt verleden" (1991) weerlegden Luc Huyse en Steven Dhondt alvast de idee van een anti-Vlaamse operatie. Dit boek ontmaskert een tweede vlaamse mythe : de repressie kende immers wel degelijk maat, en België toonde zich daarbij als een rechtsstaat. Deze studie biedt een historisch verantwworde analyse van de wijze waarop er werd afgerekend met de vrieden van de vijand.
