How was life in 1820, and how has it improved over time? Our view on socio-economicdevelopment since the Industrial Revolution is to a large extent based on the evidenceproduced by historical national accounting in the tradition of Simon Kuznets and Angus Maddison. But trends in gross domestic product (GDP) per head do not fully reflect thevarious dimensions of well-being, such as life expectancy, education, personal security orinequality. Increasingly, measures of current human development are framed in terms ofwell-being rather than in solely economic terms, but can we do the same for the lives ofour ancestors? The report examines 10 individual dimensions of well-being, tracking them over timeand space, then pulls them together in a new composite indicator. The dimensions coveredreflect a broad range of material and non-material aspects of well-being: per capita GDP,real wages, educational attainment, life expectancy, height, personal security, politicalinstitutions, environmental quality, income inequality and gender inequality. Obviously, the data quality will differ across indicators, time and countries. This report presentsthe various historical datasets for each specific dimension of well-being, discusses theirlimitations and indicates where further progress can be made.

Developmental risk refers to conditions, characteristics, experiences, or situations with potentially deleterious effects that lead to outcomes later in life that do not meet societal expectations. While risk is typically framed as the statistical probability of a problematic outcome in relation to the general population, the converse notion of well-being is considered in relation to the level of functioning at a given developmental stage. The contributors to this volume provide insight into developmental well-being by examining the ways that culture and context affect outcomes associated with various types of risk, such as those related to oppression, academic performance, family background, life history, physical health, and psychiatric conditions. Even though certain outcomes may seem inevitable in cases involving harmful environments, diseases, and disorders, they are virtually all influenced by complex interactions among individuals, their families, communities, and societies.
