De Amerikaanse professor sociologie Michael Schwalbe legt de link tussen gender en de grote structuren waarbinnen mannelijke competitie- en statusdrang mogelijk worden gemaakt en in stand gehouden. Sociologische theorieën delen de wereld vaak op tot een set van variabelen en bestuderen de patronen waarin deze voorkomen, maar kritische gendertheorie – zoals uitgelegd wordt in dit boek – schenkt ons inzicht in onszelf en de wijze waarop de samenleving werkt (ook wel ‘sociologische zelfreflectie’ genoemd). Mensen zitten namelijk gevangen binnen ideologieën en praktijken die dominantie en subordinatie in stand houden. Daaruit ontstaan valse veronderstellingen over ras en gender. Via kritische gendertheorie kunnen we externe en interne obstakels naar empathie leren identificeren en overwinnen.
Militarisme en kapitalisme zijn op mannelijke leest geschoeid en Schwalbe wil weten waarom & hoe mannen het nastreven om ‘man’ te worden, in competitie te gaan voor status en macht en waarbij ze onverschilligheid t.a.v. het lijden van anderen nodig hebben om hun doelen te bereiken: “why do they feel that ‘manhood acts’ must be done?” Het is daar dat een kritische gendertheorie antwoord op moet geven. En het feminisme is daar een belangrijk krachtbron voor: het leert ons hoe ver we moeten gaan om ons sociaal leven te transformeren en het toont ons hoe we naar problemen moeten kijken.
