Abstract

In this article I will revalue Sartre's theoretical framework of the imaginary for a phenomenological analysis of literature. In the first part I discuss some basic concepts and ideas of La Transcendance de l'Ego and L'Imaginaire - for instance: Consciousness, the Ego, Imagination and Memory - which will be used for further examination of two novels in the second part of the article. The main concern is the problematic relation between the real and the imaginary. In the first novel, Het Jaar van de Kreeft (Hugo Claus), imagination - as the psychological texture of the protagonist - will be connected to themes like desire and love. The second novel that will be discussed is one of Sartre himself: La Naussée. In this work Sartre's phenomenological preoccupations resonate with his literary ones and the imaginary takes shape in the aesthetic experience. Moreover, the authorial motives of the leading character, Roquetin, can be read through the same scheme of the imaginary and the real.
