Abstract

The Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology and Disability is the first comprehensive text providing a foundation for research and practice focusing on positive attributes of disability. The handbook’s introductory chapters introduce a paradigmatic change in how disability itself is understood, leading to the opportunity to focus research and practice regarding positive psychology’s emphasis on optimal human functioning to understand and support people with disabilities. The text provides chapters synthesizing research in traditional areas of positive psychology, including quality of life, satisfaction and well-being, hope, optimism, resilience, coping, and self-determination. Next, chapters addressing systemic applications in positive psychology to disability provide information on issues pertaining to career development and career thoughts, positive behavior supports, supported employment, education, family systems, and during aging. In addition, the text provides chapters addressing the knowledge base pertaining to the positive psychology of specific types of disability, including cognitive and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional and behavioral disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders. The text provides a foundation for infusing positive psychology into disability research and practice, and disability issues into positive psychology.

Abstract

To what extent are people with disabilities fully included in economic, political and social life? People with disabilities have faced a long history of exclusion, stigma and discrimination, but have made impressive gains in the past several decades. These gains include the passage of major civil rights legislation and the adoption of the 2006 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This book provides an overview of the progress and continuing disparities faced by people with disabilities around the world, reviewing hundreds of studies and presenting new evidence from analysis of surveys and interviews with disability leaders. It shows the connections among economic, political and social inclusion, and how the experience of disability can vary by gender, race and ethnicity. It uses a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on theoretical models and research in economics, political science, psychology, disability studies, law and sociology.

Abstract

Disability can be either an ascribed status or an achieved status and its combination with other statuses will affect the persons social experiences. The term intersectionality has been used most often to discuss the ways in which the dual and simultaneous statuses of 'black' and ''female' exist as facets of social structure and culture, interact in both those spheres, and affect individuals in ways which neither one does separately. Little attention has been paid to disability in this context, despite the many parallels to race and gender. This volume challenges critical thinking about the interrelationships with disability. It questions if the concepts and methods of intersectionality can be applied to disability at all or if they can be applied in the same way. The authors debate whether different conception of intersectionality would fit the disability context better and if there are methodologies which could be used to examine it. A variety of empirical evidence about situations in which disability intersects with other roles are also examined.

Abstract

The book Psychoanalysis and Severe Handicap: The Hand in the Cap introduces an original look at handicap, a look aiming at capturing the subjectivity, no matter how weak or uncertain it may be, of the ill Other. In this light the work of operators can become an invaluable support to the creation of the self, a crucial help to self-narration, and a valid contribution to making one's way through the entangled intricacies of language. The text falls into six chapters, which elegantly and accurately lead us into the core of the problem tackled. Focusing on the difficulties implied by the recognition of the ill Other and the acceptance of the otherness, the authorattacks those cultural policies which set autonomy and integration as absolute objectives to be achieved in the work on handicap. Instead, the author highlights the need of a path aiming at the structuring of the individuality of the disabled and at the molding of their subjectivity, starting from the subject's peculiarities.
