Seit der Antike faszinieren die Tierkulte der Ägypter, wie sehr sie bisweilen auch abstoßen mögen: Hundsköpfige Götter, Tiere im Tempel und die Mumifizierung von hunderttausenden Exemplaren - wie soll das mit dem Bild von Ägypten als Land uralter Weisheit zusammenpassen? Das Buch begibt sich auf Spurensuche; im Staub archäologischer Befunde und im Dickicht der Interpretationen. Die Beschreibung der ägyptischen Religion aus der Perspektive der Tierkulte ist der Versuch, neues Licht auf die Religion einer vergangenen Gesellschaft zu werfen. Der Schwerpunkt wird auf das Fremdartige, oft Unerklärliche dieser Religion gelegt.
