This collection of critical essays examines the diverse ways in which music -- and ideas about it -- have been disseminated in print and other media from the sixteenth century onward. Contributors look afresh at unfamiliar facets of the sixteenth-century book trade and the circulation of manuscript and printed music in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. They also analyze and critique new media forms, showing how a dizzying array of changing technologies has influenced what we hear, whom we hear, and how we hear. The repertoires considered include Western art music -- from medieval to contemporary -- as well as popular music and jazz. Assembling contributions from experts in a wide range of fields, such as musicology, music theory, music history, and jazz and popular music studies, 'Music in Print and Beyond: Hildegard von Bingen to The Beatles' sets new standards for the discussion of music's place in Western cultural life. Roberta Montemorra teaches music at the University of Iowa and is the author of 'Verdi the Student-Verdi the Teacher' (Istituto Nazionale di Studi Verdiani, 2010) and editor of 'The Cambridge Verdi Encyclopedia' (Cambridge University Press, 2013). Craig A. Monson is a Professor of Musicology at Washington University (St Louis, Missouri) and is the author of 'Divas in the Convent: Nuns, Music, and Defiance in 17th-century Italy' (University of Chicago Press, 2012).

The primary cause of death related to cancers can be traced back to metastases, originated from cancer cells. The presence of metastatic disease, the spread of cancer cells, is the most important prognostic and survival factor in patients with cancer. Although treatment of the primary tumor is well established and usually results in local control, treating metastatic disease is a much more daunting task. At diagnosis, few patients present with clinically detectable metastatic lesions regardless of the clinical prognostic factor. Clinical trials assessing potential therapeutic agents are important in order to define the best specific treatment for a particular patient, which are the basis for patient-oriented research that eventually lead to personalized medicine. This volume aims to comprehensively present the latest research and information about metastasis. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the metastatic phenomenon could have vast implications for the large number of patients who are at a high risk for the development of metastasis.

The possibility that morphine and other opioids may modulate tumour growth and metastasis has been researched for many years. The recent past has seen multiple clinical studies attempting to document whether limiting the perioperative use of morphine is beneficial for cancer surgery patients. Furthermore, a lot of exciting new data has been generated in vitro, but also in preclinical and clinical studies, that indirectly shed light on the effect of opioids on cancer. This book combines chapters written by qualified experts around the world whose research encompasses the effect of morphine or other opioids on tumour growth and metastasis. This includes clinicians, researchers working on animal models and studying the effect of morphine on tumours, and most importantly the mechanism for this effect, and lastly cell biologists. Current investigations and cross talk between basic science and clinical trials will refine our understanding of the multiple levels of actions of morphine and other opioids on tumour growth and metastasis, and result in improved guidelines for patient care. This book will be of interest to clinicians, especially those dealing with cancer patients and their pain management, as well as students, teachers and scientists in the fields of anaesthesiology, oncology, tumour biology, immunology, opioid pharmacology.

There has been a dramatic increase in knowledge of tight junctions in the past decade. The molecular structure of tight junctions, cellular functions and the pathophysiological roles of tight junctions are becoming clear. Of the most important functions, the role of the cellular structure in cancer spread and drug delivery are increasingly realised. It is now clear that there are fundamental changes to tight junctions during the process of cancer development. Tight junctions are also critical to the metastatic process of cancer cells. The cellular structure is also crucial in drug therapies, namely, the permeability and bioavailability of the drugs, penetration of barriers such as the blood brain barrier. This current volume aims to summarise the current knowledge of tight junctions, their role in cancer and cancer metastasis and is of interest to scientists and clinicians.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) launched the Data Standards Initiatives to enhance member countries’ data transparency and to promote their development of sound statistical systems. The need for data standards was highlighted by the financial crises of the mid-1990s, in which information deficiencies were seen to play a role. Under the Data Standards Initiatives, the IMF established the Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) in 1996 to provide guidance to countries that have or seek access to capital markets to disseminate key data so that users in general, and financial market participants in particular, have adequate information to assess the economic situations of individual countries. In 1997, the IMF introduced under the initiatives the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS) to provide a framework for countries that aim to develop their statistical systems, within which they can work toward disseminating comprehensive and reliable data and, eventually, meet SDDS requirements. In February 2012, the IMF Executive Board approved the establishment of the SDDS Plus as a third tier of the Fund’s Data Standards Initiatives to address data gaps revealed during the global crisis. The SDDS Plus is open to all SDDS subscribers: those with systemically important financial sectors are encouraged to adhere early to the initiative.
