An industrial paintjob on a car is a complex process. In this process minor faults like dust particles simply can't be avoided even though all precautions are made. Audi Brussels strives for top quality which means delivering faultless cars. Repairing faults in the paint means the car has to be sanded and polished. Many factors play an important role in the result of this manual labor. The importance of the polishing time had yet been defined by Audi. With a continuous improvement in mind we were free to research other factors that could be of any importance. The goal was to develop an installation that standardizes all polishing times and improves the quality. A quality control system was designed which partly automated the polishing process. The installation simplifies the labor by automatically stopping the polishing machines. A pneumatic valve interrupts the airflow to the polishing machine. The sensors information is processed by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) which actuates the valves in time. A computer is connected to the PLC to visualize realtime plant information. Het aanbrengen van de laklagen op een wagen is een complex productieproces waarbij stofdeeltjes of andere fouten, ondanks alle voorzorgsmaatregelen, moeilijk te vermijden zijn. Audi Brussels wil in zijn streven naar topkwaliteit echter alles in het werk stellen om een wagen foutvrij af te leveren. Om fouten bij het lakken te herstellen, moet er geschuurd en gepolierd worden. Dit is een manuele arbeid waarbij verschillende factoren belangrijk zijn voor het eindresultaat. De factor poliertijd was reeds door Audi opgegeven. Met het verbeteren van de kwaliteit in gedachten, stond het vrij andere factoren op te sporen en te onderzoeken. Het doel was een systeem te ontwerpen dat de poliertijd voor alle handelingen standaardiseert en zo de kwaliteit verbetert. De aangeboden oplossing is een kwaliteitsbeheersingssysteem dat een deel van het polierproces automatiseert. Het systeem zorgt er namelijk voor dat de operatoren makkelijker de poliertijden respecteren. Pneumatische ventielen schakelen de luchttoevoer voor de poliermachines tijdig af. De registratie van gegevens en de sturing van de ventielen gebeurt via een Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) en is gekoppeld aan een computer met een visualisatieprogramma.
