The prevalence of dementia is increasing rapidly as the population ages and there is a steady rise in people with dementia being admitted to acute hospitals. Media coverage of the care received by people with dementia in acute hospitals is almost wholly negative. The purpose of this book is to provide a detailed description of what the experience, both positive and negative, is really like from the perspectives of patients, lay carers, and health and social care staff, and to propose a model ...

Alzheimer's dementia (AD) affects 6 million Europeans with 10% of people over age 65 and more than a quarter over 85. Given the steady aging of European societies, dementia and cognitive decline have developed into a major health problem with an enormous socioeconomic impact for patients, their families and caregivers, national health care systems, and society. Without any means to prevent or delay disease onset, the number of people with dementia is predicted to double by 2030 and triple by 2050. There is an urgent need for innovative strategies to increase understanding of pathological events that would translate into the development of successful prevention or, possibly, novel treatment strategies. Progresses in understanding pathological events in AD have been possible by using cell cultures, genetically modified organisms and animal models that lack the complexity of events occurring in humans. We need to overcome this limitation also by using data from humans - for studying pathological pathways in AD in a multidisciplinary setting.

The prevention of dementia, and particularly of Alzheimer's disease, is a major challenge for researchers and clinicians. In this book, the mixture of evidence, observations and hypotheses in the current literature is categorized into avenues for possible preventive interventions, as suggested by the NIH State-of-the-Science Conference. The main categories are: antihypertensive medications; nutrition; cognitive engagement; volunteering and physical activity. There is, as yet, no conclusive evidence, but each category may hold promise for the prevention of dementia. The robust findings are as f

This book highlights the pathophysiological complexities of the mechanisms and factors that are likely to be involved in a range of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, other Dementia, Parkinson Diseases and Multiple Sclerosis. The spectrum of diverse factors involved in neurodegeneration, such as protein aggregation, oxidative stress, caspases and secretase, regulators, cholesterol, zinc, microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, etc, have been discussed in the context of disease progression. In addition, novel approaches to therapeutic interventions have also been presented.

MCI and Alzheimer?s Dementia: Clinical Essentials for Assessment and Treatment of Cognitive-Communication Disorders succinctly presents critical information about the cognitive-communicative disorders associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer?s disease (AD). These are the profession?s fastest-growing clinical populations: a new case of AD is diagnosed every seven seconds.Notable features of this book include:? A focus on Alzheimer?s disease, the most common cause of dementia.? Cutting-edge information about MCI, a very early stage of Alzheimer?s disease, and the role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in early identification and behavioral and/or pharmacologic treatments.? Clinical essentials?definitions, assessments, and treatments?for MCI and AD for students and practicing professionals.MCI and Alzheimer?s Dementia: Clinical Essentials for Assessment and Treatment of Cognitive-Communication Disorders was written by individuals dedicated to studying the cognitive-communication disorders of dementia and who have developed standardized tests used extensively by SLPs. It is a must-have for clinicians and students who work with patients with MCI or Alzheimer?s disease and is the ideal choice for instructors who teach adult language disorders courses, particularly those that focus on cognitive-communication disorders of adults with dementia.
