Abstract

Aspects of Linguistic Impoliteness aims to bring together a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches exploring the notion of "impoliteness" and the usage of impoliteness phenomena in language and discourse per se, instead of simply considering impoliteness as "politeness that has gone wrong". Impoliteness draws mainly on linguistics, but also its sub-disciplines, as well as related disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and communication.Various researchers have been selected to contribute to Aspects of Linguistic Impoliteness, and the diversity of s

Abstract

Using political discourses produced from below, i.e. by the common people in Cameroon rather than by prominent politicians, this chapter illustrates how the social act of thanking is realised in the written political discourse sub-genre called 'motions of support'. These are letters read on radio or TV or published in newspapers, addressed to the president thanking him for a political favour or action deemed beneficial to the group writing the motion. In most of these open letters, groups of people extend thanks to the president for appointing a member of their community, ethnic group, town,

Abstract

This book proposes a new theory ("proximization theory") in the area of political/public legitimization discourse. Located at the intersection of Pragmatics, Cognitive Linguistics and critical approaches, the theory holds that legitimization of broadly consequential political/public policies, such as pre-emptive interventionist campaigns, is best accomplished by forced construals of virtual external threats encroaching upon the speaker and her audience's home territory. The construals, which proceed along spatial, temporal and axiological lines, are forced by strategic deployment of lexico-gra

Abstract

This volume provides extensive critical information about current discussions in the study of speech actions. Its central reference point is classic speech act theory, but attention is also paid to nonstandard developments and other approaches that study speech as action. The first part of the volume deals with main concepts, methodological issues and phenomena common to different kinds of speech action. The second part deals with specific kinds of speech actions, including types of illocutionary acts and some discourse and conversational phenomena. Abstract

Personal subject pronouns are used as meta-informative markers in classical Latin. Given that they are optional when the utterance contains a personal-ending verb, we put forward the hypothesis that they inherently emphasise the person already involved by the personal ending of the verb. Careful observation of examples taken from Cicero's Correspondence shows that the pronouns ego and tu featured in discourse have a highly important role in the construction of informative coherence, since they can be used as topicalisations, but also as focalisations. Moreover, they can be

Abstract

Everyday language use overflows with discourse-pragmatic features. Their frequency, form and function can vary greatly across social groups and change dramatically over time. And yet these features have not figured prominently in studies of language variation and change. The Structure of Discourse-Pragmatic Variation demonstrates the theoretical insights that can be gained into both the structure of synchronic language variation and the interactional mechanisms creating it by subjecting discourse-pragmatic features to systematic variationist analysis. Introducing an innovative methodology that
