Abstract

Published between 1839 and 1852, this two-volume work records the contribution of William Scoresby (1789-1857) to magnetic science, a field he considered one of 'grandeur'. The result of laborious investigations into magnetism and (with James Prescott Joule) electromagnetism, Scoresby's work was particularly concerned with improving the accuracy of ships' compasses. A whaler, scientist and clergyman, he epitomised the contribution which could be made to exploration and science by provincial merchant mariners - men often less celebrated than their counterparts in the Royal Navy or in metropolitan learned societies. In addition to his pioneering work on magnetic science, Scoresby furthered knowledge of Arctic meteorology, oceanography and geography. Volume 1 considers the magnetism of steel and suggests ways to determine its quality and hardness.

Abstract

The work analyses the complex relationship between mental illnesses and curative medicine in the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, highlighting problems deriving from unsuitable practices, and shedding light on the overwhelming, asymmetric relationship between doctor/patient, man/woman. The work analyses the doubling phenomena arising from the diaries, which Hoffmann overcame determined not to fall into madness; moreover, the author highlights Hofmmann's qualities as a man and a scholar, attentive to the limits of therapies, questioning doctors without understanding. The author summarises Hoffmann's ideas on the libertarian approach to illness, which includes the acceptance of the patient in their whole being, and presents his idea of therapy consisting of interpersonal dialogue and of listening to a story which reflects a similar case. The author also suggests the novelty of the "talking cure" method ante litteram, which was then successfully adopted by psychoanalysis: a method full of ideas, fruitful for literature, from Poe to Schnitzler, and for cinema, from Hitchcock to Kubrick.

Abstract

Originally apprenticed to a bookbinder, Michael Faraday began to attend Sir Humphrey Davy's chemistry lectures purely out of interest. Although he soon recognised that science would be his vocation, there was no defined career path to follow, & when he applied to Davy for work he was gently told to 'attend to the bookbinding'. It was only after a laboratory explosion in which Davy partially lost his sight that Faraday was taken on as his amanuensis. From this difficult beginning stemmed perhaps the most famous scientific career of the 19th century. This collection of Faraday's papers provides a comprehensive record of a key branch of his work. Volume 3, first published in 1855, includes his landmark paper on the effect of magnetism on light (known now as the Faraday Effect), work on the chemical implications of magnetism, & a fascinating speculation on a link between electricity & gravity.

Volume 1, reissued here in a second edition of 1849, covers his early work in electricity & magnetism, including papers on lightning, electric fish, & notes on the elaborate & often beautiful experiments conducted to investigate whether magnetism could produce electricity.

Abstract

The Fundamentals of Magnetism is a truly unique reference text, that explores the study of magnetism and magnetic behavior with a depth that no other book can provide. It covers the most detailed descriptions of the fundamentals of magnetism providing an emphasis on statistical mechanics which is absolutely critical for understanding magnetic behavior. The books covers the classical areas of basic magnetism, including Landau Theory and magnetic interactions, but features a more concise and easy-to-read style. Perfect for upper-level graduate students and industry researchers, The Fu

Abstract

In this book, the authors gather and present recent advances in magnetism research. Topics discussed include the field theory of magnetism; long-range order (LRO) and phase transition in the quantum anisotropic ferromagnetic Ising-Heisenberg linear chain; Green's function method in the Bogoliubov-Tyablikov version of the quantum theory of magnetism; diluted magnetic semiconductors; perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in half-metallic Heusler alloy films; a comparative study of the structural and physical properties of spinel nano-ferrites synthesized by a co-precipitation method; and the hystere
