Abstract

In this special issue, reviews of various aspects of HD therapy were submitted from both groups. In particular, various methods for vascular access were discussed by many contributors. From these reviews, the reader will gain precious hints and suggestions in every day practice. Previously, many textbooks on "Hemodialysis" have been published but they were written by only a couple of authors. However, in this special issue several authors discussed similar subjects, producing precious and fruitful suggestions. This will be very helpful for readers to understand and carry out HD practice. I hope this special issue will contain useful information for those who are involved in HD therapy.

Abstract

This book summarizes the advances and new concepts introduced in the last years on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and its complications. PD therapy is a renal replacement peritoneal membrane using a semi-permeable barrier to liquids and solutes. The abdominal cavity with all its components, mesothelial cells, fat tissue, immune system components and others are activated by the PD fluids that although every time are more biocompatible, induce production of molecules with the local and systemic effects. Locally there is a thickening of the peritoneal membrane leading to the failure of this and where the transdifferentiation of mesothelial cells plays a key role. Systemically activating abdominal cavity appears to be involved in atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension, renal bone disease pathway and others.

Abstract

This book targets three fields of computational multi-scale cardiac modeling. First, advanced models of the cellular atrial electrophysiology and fiber orientation are introduced. Second, novel methods to create patient-specific models of the atria are described. Third, applications of personalized models in basic research and clinical practice are presented. The results mark an important step towards the patient-specific model-based atrial fibrillation diagnosis, understanding and treatment.
