From the time of hunter-gatherers to the present day, forests have played a vital role in the development of humanity and society. This broad introductory textbook sets world forestry in a social, environmental, historical, and economic context. The development of forests, grassland and humans is described from the Devonian through to the Age of Agriculture, covering the factors determining the distribution of forests, the classification of forest types, the value and benefits of the forest and the products of the forest and their associated trade. The book also explores issues such as sustainable forest management, current patterns of deforestation and reforestation, and future challenges facing our forests. Fully updated throughout and with new contributions from international experts, this second edition includes new chapters on climate change and international forest policy, and expanded coverage of forest products and bioenergy production.

The framework programme states the orientation of the Nordic political co-operation in fisheries and aquaculture, agriculture, food and forestry in the period 2013-2016 within the Nordic Council of Ministers. The framework programme presents opportunities and describes the main challenges in the area. The programme for the Presidency in each year will specify and supplement the framework programme. Together, the two programmes comprise the plan of action for the co-operation. The framework programme also observes the priorities and strategies in the Nordic Council of Ministers that are established by the prime ministers, ministers for co-operation and other councils of ministers when working with themes and issues within which MR-FJLS can contribute.

Forestry work is a physically demanding activity and is accompanied by intensive stress on the musculoskeletal system. The professional group of foresters is therefore not affected by the risk factor of lack of exercise, which is widespread in today's society. Rather, stereotypical movement patterns are responsible for the development of muscular imbalances, which in turn can be etiological for back problems. In the context of the present study, the conditions and work activities in forest work were first analyzed. On the basis of a biopsychosocial approach, a movement-based intervention for foresters was designed. The goal was to to reduce work-related stress in the sense of sporting balance training and to strengthen specific health resources. The intervention was implemented in the operational context for a period of three years. The evaluation was based on selected motor and psychosocial parameters and an analysis of the sick leave. The results clarify the necessity of a movement-related intervention in a job profile with a comparatively high physical load and it was shown how such a measure can be implemented in the long-term in the operational context.
