Ce manuel, léger, simple à consulter, se veut au plus proche de la pratique quotidienne du médecin, du remplaçant ou des auxiliaires médicaux. Son but est de permettre au praticien de cibler, en un temps record, l'approche diagnostique d'un symptôme ophtalmologique, de le traiter ou de savoir le diriger sans tarder vers un spécialiste ou même directement vers un service hospitalier ophtalmologique ou neurologique. Il ne s'agit pas d'un ouvrage exhaustif ni d'un atlas agrémenté d'iconographies couvrant toute l'ophtalmologie. Mais d'un guide concis, pédagogique et facile à consulter au vu et à l'écoute du patient. Son objectif est de transmettre, au jeune confrère, l'expérience purement clinique, le mot, ou l'image qui oriente d'emblée vers un diagnostic simple ou au contraire vers la nécessité impérative d'utiliser des techniques spécialisées. Certains diagnostics qui paraissent faciles cachent, parfois, une atteinte plus profonde qu'un examen physique simple et un bon interrogatoire peuvent souvent suggérer et éviter ainsi un retard fâcheux pour l'avenir visuel du patient. L'auteur espère apprendre aux confrères à connaître et reconnaître les différents points d'orientation clinique et diagnostique qui doivent d'une part aider les non initiés, d'autre part servir de bréviaire et de mémoire aux autres.
