Der Fokus der empirisch-qualitativ ausgerichteten Untersuchung zentriert sich auf den pädagogischen Umgang mit Heterogenität und Pluralität. Das dafür notwendige spezifische Handlungswissen von Lehrenden, das sich aus der synergetischen Wirkung von theoretisch fachlichem Wissen und praktischer pädagogischer Erfahrungen ergibt, wird als Differenzfähigkeit bezeichnet. Durch sie können Lehrende Lernpotentiale und -hemmnisse der SchülerInnen im Unterricht erkennen und in sinnvoller Weise pädagogisch darauf eingehen.
