Inanna was de grote godin van de Sumeriërs, een volk dat vijfduizend jaar geleden in het huidige Irak de eerste grote stedelijke beschaving creëerde. Inanna was een liefdesgodin, godin van de planeet Venus, en verantwoordelijk voor de vruchtbaarheid van het land. De Griekse Aphrodite en de Romeinse Venusgodin hebben veel aspecten van Inanna overgenomen. De koningen vereerden Inanna en vierden met haar het ritueel van het Heilig Huwelijk. Maar zij riepen haar hulp ook in tijdens de langdurige oorlogen die ze voerden, zodat Inanna trekken van een oorlogsgodin kreeg. Als vruchtbaarheidsgodin leidde Inanna een hartstochtelijk liefdesleven. Haar grote liefde was Dumuzi. Hij was geen god, maar een gewone sterveling. Hij was herder en leefde met zijn kudde in de steppe. De boeren zongen over dit liefdespaar talloze liederen tijdens de vele feesten die in de loop van het landbouwjaar werden gevierd. Hun liefdesspel kwam de groei van de gewassen en de vruchtbaarheid van de veestapel ten goede. Maar de idylle heeft niet lang geduurd, want Dumuzi werd vermoord. Wie vermoordde Dumuzi en waarom? Het antwoord op deze vragen ligt diep verscholen in de verborgen geschiedenis van de oude landbouwvolken. De wereld waarin deze godin leefde ligt ver achter ons, maar dankzij de uitvinding van het schrift zijn een aantal schitterende prijsliederen en mythen over Inanna en haar geliefde herder Dumuzi tot in onze tijd bewaard gebleven.
