The history of drawing, in common with the history of much else, is the history of what has survived.' In the sixteenth century, drawings came to be valued as works of art in their own right. In recognition of this, collectors through time have ensured the preservation of countless drawings. This book takes us through the process of drawing as a functional art of lines. Through the journey from figure to landscape, sketch to meticulously detailed piece and from the artist's studio to the collector's vast portfolio, the exhibition examines what has survived and raises questions about the value of what has been lost. Examining the value of a drawing, the book charters the growth in appreciation of this undefined form and offers insight into the vision of both the artist and the collector. This 184 page catalogue features all the prints on display in the 2013 Ashmolean Master Drawings exhibition.

A faun carrying an umbrella; a hobbit who lives in a hole; a mysterious name, Lyra; an ill-treated schoolboy with a scar and a secret. Children's fantasy books often begin with resonant images. However, they also begin in an author's reading practices. How do children's authors incorporate myths and legends into their work? And how do myths and legends change as a result? In this illustrated collection of essays a team of academic experts trace the magical tales from Norse myth, Arthurian legend and medieval literature which have inspired the finest writers for children, including C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Alan Garner. Drawing on collections of manuscripts and rare books in the Bodleian Library, additional chapters put the spotlight on spell books, grimoires and books that do magic, as well as exploring stunning examples of pop-up books, harlequinades and concertina panoramas from the Opie Collection of Children's Literature. Other writers under discussion include children's authors of the Victorian era, such as George MacDonald, Rudyard Kipling and E. Nesbit, and twentieth-century writers Susan Cooper, Diana Wynne Jones and Philip Pullman. Through wide-ranging analysis these essays show how literature and tales from the Middle Ages and earlier still have been reinterpreted for each generation and continue to have a profound impact on writers of fantasy books for children today.

Creating Postcolonial Literature examines the publishing of African literature in the postcolonial period. Its focus is the largely forgotten Three Crowns series by Oxford University Press (1962-1976), which was the vehicle for the publication of Wole Soyinka and Athol Fugard, along with many other major African writers, including Lewis Nkosi, John Pepper Clark, Obi Egbuna, Oswald Mtshali, Joe de Graft and Leopold Sédar Senghor. It addresses the construction of literary value, the relationships between African writers and British publishers, and the critical importance of the African marketplace in the development of African literature during this period. Based on new archival research, it assesses the institutions of postcolonial literary publishing on both a macro and micro level, by combining a thorough analysis of the historical, political and economic context of British publishing in Africa in this period with detailed author case studies.

The pivotal position of the Oxford region in the geological and therefore building history of England is of fundamental importance to the study of traditional construction. Oxford occupies a central position on the ancient route between Northampton and Southampton and on the east - west road between London, The West Country, Wales and Ireland. For this reason, unusually for vernacular architecture, the buildings of the region were subject to a wide range of influences. This book, the fruit of twenty years research, provides an account of vernacular architecture in the Oxford region from Anglo-
