Modernity has opened the way towards a grand diversity of form. However, even if architecture is a cultural phenomenon, this does not mean it is a product of fashion - it is not ephemeral enough for that. An architect just starting out is best advised to aim for the essential, or to rediscover certain time-tested certainties before transgressing them. The first part of this work explores the means of compositional architecture, followed by the interpretation of the relationships between space, light, and place. Four or five thousand years of history has shown the resilience of certain fundamental principles intrinsic to our disciple that organizes, in three dimensions, the vital space of man. In the second part, the author provides certain keys to managing the relationship between form, material and construction, keeping in mind that the need to build has never been sufficient, in itself, to design the form of the house or the city. Neither dictionary, nor encyclopedia, this work attempts to fill a gap: it proposes an introduction to architectural design and criticism, considered in the light of our time. Praised by critics and used as a book of reference in numerous schools, the first edition of this book has been translated into English, Italian, German, Korean and Chinese.

Airports look alike all over the world. Schiphol has conformed to the patterns of the airport, but its unique design makes it stand out. This title looks into the history of the Netherlands' most famous national airport and its sophisticated appearance. Schiphol has grown in fits and starts as a result of everƯexpanding traffic in freight and passengers. The area around Schiphol is constantly evolving, yet there is great consistency in the visual aspect of this airport, which can rightly be called a 'megaƯstructure'. This is not merely due to the efforts of its designers, who have strived to achieve a spectacular simplicity. Other factors, such as its location in a polder and the local planning culture, have also played a role. In this book an analysis of its metamorphoses over the past century demonstrates Schiphol's unique character and its function as a model for other airports.

No architectural category is more fickle or more artificial than 'context'. This collection of 60 large drawings produced over five years by AA Diploma 15 addresses the construction of context by architecture for its own very particular purposes. A self-declared 'render-free zone', the unit's interrogations of architecture's seminal sites (antiquity, technology, the future and its proxies) examine the role of figuration and the exclusion of indeterminacy in the always already mediated question of context. Through the quiet business of counting, these line drawings - against the double ascendancy of parametricisation and the glossy rendered perspective - question architecture's ambivalent relations to the artifice it installs between itself and the outside world.
