Le patrimoine culturel a pris une place croissante dans nos sociétés, à la fois comme marqueur identitaire et ressource touristique, ou encore comme attraction culturelle. Au-delà des monuments historiques et des chefs-d'œuvre, le patrimoine intègre aujourd'hui des pratiques et des objets plus locaux, moins exceptionnels, mais tout aussi empreints de valeur aux yeux de ceux qui les protègent. Si on le retrouve partout, aussi bien dans les restes archéologiques que dans les expressions culturelles les plus modernes, c'est surtout dans les villes que se concentre le patrimoine. La diversité des contextes, des acteurs et des cultures produit autant de situations qui questionnent le patrimoine urbain, sa gestion et sa place dans la ville. Les textes rassemblés ici cherchent à interroger la notion de patrimoine urbain plutôt qu'à la définir, notamment par l'analyse des processus par lesquels les acteurs privés et publics donnent du sens à cet environnement particulier et, ce faisant, comment ils le transforment.
