This volume explores the interpretation of indefinites and the constraints on their distribution by paying particular attention to key issues in the interface between syntax and semantics: the relation between the semantic properties of indefinite determiners and the denotation of indefinite DPs, their scope, and their behaviour in generic and conditional sentences. Examples come from French, other Romance languages and English. Central to the proposed analyses is a distinction between two types of entities, individualized entities and amounts. Weak indefinites are analyzed as existential generalized quantifiers over amounts and strong indefinites as either Skolem terms or generalized quantifiers over individualized entities. The up-to-date review of the literature and the new falsifiable proposals contained in this book will be of particular interest to linguistics students and scholars interested in the cross-linguistic semantics of indefinites.  .

L’histoire du français, comme celle de toute langue, est, par nature, de l’ordre du continu, ce qui rend délicate l’assignation de bornes et d’étapes exprimées dans les termes d’une chronologie précise. Néanmoins les linguistes distinguent volontiers le français médiéval, celui qui, sur le territoire de la langue d’oïl, s’inscrit dans l’espace gallo-romain, du français classique, moderne ou encore contemporain. En son sein, la distinction de l’ancien et du moyen français souligne des étapes dans le développement phonétique, morphologique, syntaxique et lexical de la langue. Sur un corpus nécessairement clos mais aussi silencieux car analysable qu’aux travers des écrits, cet ouvrage nous invite à comprendre la formation de la langue française depuis 842 et les Serments de Strasbourg (premier texte officiel écrit en langue romane) jusqu’à l’imprimerie. Il montre ainsi comment une langue à prétention standardisante émerge peu à peu de la diversité des dialectes.
