Abstract

This book deals with commonly reported accusations about the nature of teacher education based on arguments and disagreements about what teacher education should do, how it should do it and what it should produce in its graduates. Much of these accusations are on out of date or obsolete ideals of the "good" teacher. It is a philosophical exploration of the crisis in which teacher education finds itself in the world of neo-liberal capitalism, privatization, accountability, consumerism and globalization. The book develops a meta-theory of teacher education which analyses three major approaches to teacher education (Enlightenment, Romanticism, and Belief-Oriented programs), each of them suggest a different epistemological and ethical world-view. Accordingly, each of them lead to a different vision of teachers' identity, and inform different type of programs of teacher education. While critically discussing how each of the three approaches is manifested in various Teacher Education programs, the book proposes a new synthesis arising from them. Although seemingly contradictory, they can be seen as various aspects of a more "balanced", multifaceted and adequate ideal of a better way to prepare teachers in the present era. Ways of Learning to Teach is a tribute to the work of teacher educators and is informing for anyone who is interested in teaching and learning in the 21st century. This is a compelling book that brings together a number of conflicting (and often taken-for-granted) views of teacher preparation in ways that helps to makes sense of the complex enterprise that is teacher education. Back offers an interesting and thought provoking way of understanding criticisms about teacher education and offers a positive and productive way forward. This book is a must read for teacher educators.

Abstract

International Trademark Classification: A Guide to the Nice Agreement helps trademark and IP attorneys properly classify goods and services on trademark applications. It explains the forty-five Classes of goods and services adopted under the Nice Agreement, a worldwide classification system for trademark registration adhered to by more than seventy countries. Author Jessie N. Roberts sets forth the Official Text of Class Headings and the Explanatory Notes for which goods and services are included or excluded from each Class. This is followed by an examination of each item within the Class, including items for which there are no official explanations. This book can be helpful to trademark practitioners and national offices in the classification of items not included in the alphabetical list. The approach is international in scope, and is not organized from the viewpoint of any specific jurisdiction. This new Fourth Edition clarifies some of the Classes--particularly Classes 5, 9, and 28--and makes the Alphabetical List of the Nice Agreement more logical and useful.

Abstract

This book explores the importance of Cognitive Linguistics for specialized language within the context of Frame-based Terminology (FBT). FBT uses aspects of Frame Semantics, coupled with premises from Cognitive Linguistics to structure specialized domains and create non-language-specific knowledge representations. Corpus analysis provides information regarding the syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of specialized knowledge units. Also studied is the role of metaphor and metonymy in specialized texts. The first section explains the purpose and structure of the book. The second section gives an overview of basic concepts, theories, and applications in Terminology and Cognitive Linguistics. The third section explains the Frame-based Terminology approach. The fourth section explores the role of contextual information in specialized knowledge representation as reflected in linguistic contexts and graphical information. The final section highlights the conclusions that can be derived from this study.

Abstract

This book addresses recent developments in medical and language education. In both fields, there have been methodological shifts towards 'task-based' and 'problem-based learning'. In addition, both fields have broadened their focus on clinical expertise and linguistic skills to address issues of cultural competence. English in Medical Education responds to these changes by re-imagining the language classroom in medical settings as an arena for the exploration of values and professional identity. The chapters cover topics such as the nature of cultural competence; how to understand spoken discourse in a range of medical settings; the use of tasks and problems in language education for medics; the development of critical skills and the use of literature and visual media in language education for doctors. It will interest everyone teaching English for Medical Purposes.

Abstract

A King Travels examines the scripting and performance of festivals in Spain between 1327 and 1620, offering an unprecedented look at the different types of festivals that were held in Iberia during this crucial period of European history. Bridging the gap between the medieval and early modern eras, Teofilo Ruiz focuses on the travels and festivities of Philip II, exploring the complex relationship between power and ceremony, and offering a vibrant portrait of Spain's cultural and political life. Ruiz covers a range of festival categories: carnival, royal entries, tournaments, calendrical and noncalendrical celebrations, autos de fe, and Corpus Christi processions. He probes the ritual meanings of these events, paying special attention to the use of colors and symbols, and to the power relations articulated through these festive displays. Ruiz argues that the fluid and at times subversive character of medieval festivals gave way to highly formalized and hierarchical events reflecting a broader shift in how power was articulated in late medieval and early modern Spain. Yet Ruiz contends that these festivals, while they sought to buttress authority and instruct different social orders about hierarchies of power, also served as sites of contestation, dialogue, and resistance. A King Travels sheds new light on Iberian festive traditions and their unique role in the centralizing state in early modern Castile.
