Abstract

Naturalist and surgeon Sir John Richardson (1787-1865) accompanied Sir John Franklin on his first two Arctic expeditions. Richardson collected specimens during the trips and produced this four-volume natural history work on his return. Volume 3 was first published in 1836 and is devoted to Canadian Arctic fish species.

Abstract

Fishes have evolved to colonise almost every type of aquatic habitat and today they are a hugely diverse group of over 25,000 species. The evolution of this great diversity of species has resulted in a myriad of solutions to the demands posed by the aquatic environment.Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Fishes presents a current and comprehensive overview of fish physiology to demonstrate how living fishes function in their environment. As with other books in the Series, the emphasis is on the unique physiological characteristics of the fish, but with applications to questions of broad

Abstract

This book provides an understanding on a large variety of related topics in fish biology. The further development on molecular and cellular biology and ecology leads to assimilate the newer scientific knowledge in this area. Leading research works from around the world are brought together in this book to produce a valuable source of reference for teachers, researcher, and advanced students of biological science. The fist three chapters of this book give a general description of the complex biology of the immune response. Detailed descriptions were also included on understanding of cytokine regulation in teleost immune system. The second three chapters provide information on the environmental stressors on the responses of freshwater fish across molecular to population level. Then, the following two chapters review two special topics; the roles of the atrium and the ventricle across teleost species and the tracer methodologies on the measurements of carbohydrate metabolism. The last chapter discusses the variables that are involved in the feeding behavior of a predatory freshwater fish species.

Abstract

With some 480 currently known fresh- and brackish-water fish species, Suriname has a rich inland fish fauna that is related to the most diverse freshwater fish fauna on planet Earth, i.e. that of the Amazon River. Interest in the freshwater fishes of Suriname by naturalists and scientists extends back over more than two centuries. Suriname is undoubtedly the site of origin of the oldest extant preserved specimens of South American fishes and 19 Surinamese fish species were described and figured by Linnaeus. Building on ichthyological studies initiated in the 1960's by the Brokopondo Project, this book provides an introduction to the freshwater fish fauna of Suriname, including identification keys, photographs of the species and descriptions of their habitats, that should be especially useful to decision makers, conservation biologists, aquarium hobbyists and eco-tourists.
