While the chapters in this book are a long way from solving the enigma that is CFS, they do represent important attempts to understand this complex and perplexing disease. A common theme in them all is CFS as a multisystem disease with the possibility of more than one cause and influenced by a variety of interacting factors. Further, they acknowledge the reality of CFS for persons with this disease and the importance of finding causes, treatments and ultimately a cure. As advanced biomedical research techniques are increasingly applied to the study of CFS, it is surely only a matter of time before biomarkers are identified, etiologies understood, and remedies devised.

Waarom onze geneeskunde zich geen raad weet met chronische ziekten! Steeds meer mensen krijgen voor hun onverklaarbare langdurige vermoeidheid en spierpijnen de diagnose CVS. Volgens de auteur zijn CVS en fibromyalgie (chronische spierpijn) echter nepdiagnoses. Het zijn benamingen voor klachten die veroorzaakt worden door een slecht werkend immuunsysteem, een verstoorde hormoonwerking en zieke darmen en/of onaangepaste voeding. Het goede nieuws is dat de oorzaak van CVS en FM altijd kan worden gevonden, als men er maar naar zoekt. Onze artsen zijn hiervoor onvoldoende opgeleid en kennen te weinig over de werking van onze hormonen en ons immuun systeem. De criteria om patiënten met hormonale tekorten of immuniteitsstoornissen te behandelen zijn bovendien hopeloos achterhaald, zodat het RIZIV enkel de behandeling van patiënten die in een terminaal stadium zijn aanbeland, goedkeurt.
