Since Marcion’s second century criticism of the biblical notion of God’s anger, interpreters have suggested various interpretations of the wrath of God in the Old Testament. The first part of this study outlines the history of explanations by OT scholars. Since Paul Volz, scholars tend to understand the wrath of God in opposition to God’s love, whereas former contributions interpreted it rather as an integral part of covenant theology. Since both positions and their respective typologies of God’s anger are somewhat limited, this study’s second part examines relevant texts from the Book of Psalms. Three types of divine wrath can be distinguished: (1) response to human guilt, (2) reaction against the behaviour of enemies, which implicates help for the suffering, and (3) God’s anger as an interpretament of incomprehensible suffering. In a third part, these results are assessed in the context of the whole OT and Ancient Near Eastern texts. While the larger picture confirms the three types, response to the violation of the sacred can be adduced as a fourth motive. The book ends with a theological proposition: to understand God’s wrath as an aspect of His justice. Viewed in this way, anger does not contradict God’s love and grace, but His pity. As such, it may be understood as an aspect of hope, insofar that it allows to incomprehensible suffering in relation to God as a just judge – a view which allowed OT authors to interpret suffering and especially the suffering of Israel during the exile.

Recent research on the text of the Psalms and Gospels in Greek and in certain versions, principally Coptic, Georgian and Armenian, reveals common characteristics when attempting to separate later editions of a text from its earliest forms. The essays in this collection give concrete examples of the issues involved and suggested explanations for textual changes.

The Psalms are the most-read part of the Old Testament, but their importance for ethics has often been overlooked. However, the Psalms offer some of the most potent ethical instruction in the Bible. In this book internationally renowned Old Testament scholar Gordon Wenham examines the source of the Psalms' power, reflects on their main ethical themes, and shows how they function as prayers that change us. --from publisher description

Drawing inspiration from the widely recognized parody of Ps 8:5 in Job 7:17-18, this study inquires whether other allusions to the Psalms might likewise contribute to the dialogue between Job, his friends, and God. An intertextual method that incorporates both "diachronic" and "synchronic" concerns is applied to the sections of Job and the Psalms in which the intertextual connections are the most pronounced, the Job dialogue and six psalms that fall into three broad categories: praise (8, 107), supplication (39, 139), and instruction (1, 73). In each case, Job's dependence on the Psalms is determined to be the more likely explanation of the parallel, and, in most, allusions to the same psalm appear in the speeches of both Job and the friends. The contrasting uses to which they put these psalms reflect conflicting interpretive approaches and uncover latent tensions within them by capitalizing on their ambiguities. They also provide historical insight into the Psalms' authority and developing views of retribution. The dialogue created between Job and these psalms indicates the concern the book has with the proper response to suffering and the role the interpretation of authoritative texts may play in that reaction.
