L'ornamento, nell'accezione greca di ágalma (ciò che risplende e onora, e perciò glorifica), è stato per oltre un millennio uno dei segni elettivi con i quali la gloria del Dio della Bibbia, imprimendo le figure della santità cristiana, ha disseminato nella storia le sue tracce visibili. Le impronte di gloria (orme divine, reliquie, reliquiari, immagini votive e altre insegne e sostanze cristiche) avrebbero enucleato alcuni tra i più importanti dispositivi rituali che, dalla Tarda Antichità al Rinascimento, attivarono l'efficacia politica dello scambio salvifico. È il regime discorsivo e rituale, qui definito paradigma agalmatico, che istituì e governò l'immaginario economico e religioso dell'Europa cristiana consentendo l'incessante metamorfosi dei beni terreni nei tesori celesti e innescando il sistema retributivo della grazia e del miracolo. Dal XII secolo, l'oro dei santi e l'oro monetale, fino ad allora non separabili perché parte e motore di uno stesso circuito sacrificale, divaricarono per sempre i propri destini. Si avviò così la transizione epocale dal paradigma agalmatico alla modernità economica, dal mondo dell'ornamentum al regime dell'utilitas, dall'era dell'effigie e dell'impronta all'età dell'arte e degli artisti.

Reliquaries, one of the central art forms of the Middle Ages, have recently been the object of much interest among historians and artists. Until now, however, they have had no treatment in English that considers their history, origins, and place within religious practice, or, above all, their beauty and aesthetic value. In Strange Beauty, Cynthia Hahn treats issues that cut across the class of medieval reliquaries as a whole. She is particularly concerned with portable reliquaries that often contained tiny relic fragments, which purportedly allowed saints to actively exercise power in the world. Above all, Hahn argues, reliquaries are a form of representation. They rarely simply depict what they contain; rather, they prepare the viewer for the appropriate reception of their precious contents and establish the "story" of the relics. They are based on forms originating in the Bible, especially the cross and the Ark of the Covenant, but find ways to renew the vision of such forms. They engage the viewer in many ways that are perhaps best described as persuasive or "rhetorical," and Hahn uses literary terminology--sign, metaphor, and simile--to discuss their operation. At the same time, they make use of unexpected shapes--the purse, the arm or foot, or disembodied heads--to create striking effects and emphatically suggest the presence of the saint.

Kathedralkirche St. PaulusEine große Sonderausstellung im LWL-Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte und in der Domkammer der Kathedralkirche St. Paulus in Münster zeigt diese "Goldene Pracht" in neuem Licht. Die Schau würdigt erstmals sowohl den künstlerischen Rang der Werke, als auch ihren historischen Kontext. Grundlage für die neue Herangehensweise bildet die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Exzellenzcluster "Religion und Politik" der Universität Münster. Das zugehörige, opulente Katalogbuch vereinigt Aufsätze ausgewiesener Spezialisten für die Schatzkunst des Mittelalters und die Geschichte Westfalens, einer vielfältigen Region mit europaweiten Beziehungen. Dabei werden die Funktionen mittelalterlicher Prachtentfaltung ebenso beleuchtet wie die Beweggründe für die Stiftung wertvollster Kunstwerke und die Bedeutung von Kirchenschätzen
