Anal and Rectal Diseases: A Concise Manual provides a succinct reference on the subject for clinicians, including primary care physicians, gastroenterologists, general surgeons, physician's assistants and nurse practitioners. Presented in a consistent structural style that provides both a general summary of individual topics within the field along with additional details to assist those with some background knowledge in the subject area, this handy volume provides information related to the field of anorectal disease in a format that is easily accessible for rapid acquisition of knowledge. Each topic is outlined in a multidisciplinary fashion with the medical, surgical, and pathological aspects clearly detailed in each section. Each section clearly describes the condition with up-to-date management guidelines and precious clinical pearls. The volume features high quality illustrations in the form of elegant hand drawn figures, tables, photographs of physical findings, endoscopic finds and radiographs. The clinical photographs and x-rays will be of great value to gastroenterologists whose specialty is not coloproctology. Chapters on computerized tomographic colography (virtual colonoscopy) and others cover the newer technologies employed for diagnostic purposes in these diseases. Anal and Rectal Diseases: A Concise Manual provides clinicians with a tool for rapid consultation for direct patient care and management.

The SAGES Manual on the Fundamental Use of Surgical Energy (FUSE) emphasizes good communication and promotes best practice for the use of electrosurgical, ultrasonic, and microwave energy sources in the operating theatre. This manual describes the basic technology of energy sources in the operating room and demonstrates the correct use and indications of energy sources in clinical practice. It also addresses the potential complications, hazards, and errors in the use of surgical energy sources and evaluates the potential interactions of energy sources with other medical devices. Any healthcare professional who has ever picked up an energy device in the OR such as a “Bovie” , Ultrasonic or bipolar instrument will better understand how it works, when to apply it, and what are the possible hazards and errors in its use. The SAGES Manual on the Fundamental Use of Surgical Energy (FUSE) is the first volume of its kind to provide such guidance and will be of great value to surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, endoscopists, and allied health care professionals who use these devices.

Manual of Fast Track Recovery for Colorectal Surgery provides a broad overview on enhanced recovery, with expert opinions from leaders in the field regarding elements of enhanced recovery care that are generic and specific to colorectal surgery. This book covers the patient journey through such a programme, commencing with optimisation of the patient’s condition, patient education and conditioning of their expectations. Manual of Fast Track Recovery for Colorectal Surgery investigates the metabolic response to surgery, anaesthetic contributions and optimal fluid management, after surgery. It also details examples of enhanced recovery pathways and practical tips on post-operative pain control, feeding, mobilisation and criteria for discharge. Manual of Fast Track Recovery for Colorectal Surgery is a valuable reference tool for colorectal surgeons, anaesthetists, ward nurses and other members of the team involved in perioperative care: pain control specialists, physiotherapists, dietitians, specialist therapists (such as colorectal and stoma nurses), and outpatient nurses.

The work describes a new method of sphincter salvage in surgery of rectal cancer. Low tumors of the rectum are traditionally treated with amputation of the rectum. However, this operation is not well-received by patients, since it results in a permanent colostomy. By contrast, intersphincteric resection allows sphincter salvage even in low tumors and is now widely accepted among experts in the field of colorectal surgery. The book will describe the basics (pathology, physiology, radiology) as well as the surgical technique and its different modifications.

The volume is authored by a colorectal surgeon with long-standing clinical and scientific experience and is devoted to the management of complications following surgery of the anorectum and the pelvic floor. It is aimed not only at general surgeons, perineologists and, of course, proctologists, but also at gastroenterologists, endoscopists, radiologists and physiotherapists, i.e. those who may be involved in both diagnosis and cure whenever an adverse event, either unpredictable or potentially preventable, causes an intra- or postoperative, early or late, mild or life-threatening complication. Severe bleeding, dehiscence, perforation, anorectal stricture, fecal incontinence, and even caval vein thrombosis, fatal Fournier gangrene and pneumomediastinum may occur after anal surgery. The incidence, pathogenesis prevention and treatment of such events are discussed in detail in 10 chapters with 30 tables, 200 illustrations and more than 1000 references. Both conventional procedures and recent innovations are reported. “Unforgettable clinical cases (complications with litigation)” and “Tips and Tricks” are sections increasing the appeal of this book. The approach is “evidence-based” and holistic, focusing on anorectal problems while taking into consideration whole body-mental unity—showing, for example, that a non-healing perineal wound may be due to hypo-pituitarism, and failure after a re-intervention may be related to psychological distress.
