Original papers by leading international authors address the most important problem in the philosophy of language, the question of how to assess the prospects of developing a tenable theory of meaning, given the influential sceptical attacks mounted against the concept of meaning by Willard Van Quine and Saul Kripke and their adherents in particular. Thus the texts attempt to answer the fundamental questions - of whether there are meanings, and, if there are, of what they are and of the form a serious philosophical theory of meaning should take.

According to epistemic two-dimensionalism, or simply two dimensionalism, linguistic expressions are associated with two intensions, one of which represents an expression's a priori implications. The author investigates the prospects of conceptual analysis on the basis of a two dimensionalist theory of meaning. He discusses a number of arguments for and against two-dimensional semantics and argues that properly construed, two-dimensionalism provides a potent and plausible account of meaning. Against the background of this account, the author then goes on to assess the value of conceptual analysis in philosophical practice, outlining ist goals, ist promises, but also ist limitations.

What is it to claim that "misogyny" might be "ironic"? Why is it that, in the works of Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and Schopenhauer, the possibility of irony constantly interferes with a conclusive ethical judgement over the meaning of their "misogyny"? How do we hold our interpretations of such ambiguous texts ethically accountable? This book brings together the driving concerns of hermeneutics, feminist philosophy and the history of philosophy in dealing with the "problem of irony". It develops...

Inferentialism as a theory of meaning builds on the idea that what a linguistic expression means depends exclusively on the inferential rules that govern its use. Following different strategies and exploring various case studies, the authors of this collection of essays discuss under what circumstances and to what extent the central tenets of inferentialism are tenable. The essays in this volume present the results of a three-year research project "Representation and Inference" which was con...

Jonathan Berg argues for the Theory of Direct Belief, which treats having a belief about an individual as an unmediated relation between the believer and the individual the belief is about. After a critical review of alternative positions, Berg uses Grice's theory of conversational implicature to provide a detailed pragmatic account of substitution failure in belief ascriptions and goes on to defend this view against objections, including those based on an unwarranted ""Inner Speech"" Picture of Thought. The work serves as a case study in pragmatic explanation, dealing also with methodological

This study looks to the work of Tarski's mentors Stanislaw Lesniewski and Tadeusz Kotarbinski, and reconsiders all of the major issues in Tarski scholarship in light of the conception of Intuitionistic Formalism developed: semantics, truth, paradox, logical consequence.

Sebastian Knell examines the theory of language and intentionality developed by Robert B. Brandom in his widely-discussed monograph Making it explicit . His study is centred on a critical examination of Brandom's thesis that intentional states (e.g. beliefs) are bound to linguistic ability. The monograph opens with a presentation of Brandom's general theory of conceptual content; the author reconstructs the basic explanatory principles and the multi-layered architecture of this theory, and in addition he discusses certain problems of Brandom's pragmatic explanatory strategy. This is the first time that such a detailed reconstruction has been published in German, and thus the book is also of use for those readers seeking general orientation about Brandom's theory. The second part discusses various arguments based on Brandom's analyses in favour of intentionality being bound to language. Knell's sceptical conclusion is that these analyses only lead to a foundation within the theory, which carries limited conviction.
