Abstract

This book examines and compares the in-school and out-of-school use of the internet by children. Previous research and recent writings on this topic are examined and a theoretical framework is formed that eclectically draws on a number of sources, including postmodern authors. Through the use of a mixed methodology, it was found that informal learning using the internet often appears as self-motivated Other a strong sense of ownership both of content creation and social networking. It is ofte...

Abstract

Online Communication in a Second Language examines the use of social computer mediated communication (CMC) with speakers of Japanese via longitudinal case studies of up to four years. Through the analysis of over 2000 blogs, emails, videos, messages, games, and websites, in addition to interviews with learners and their online contacts, the book explores language use and acquisition via contextual resources, repair, and peer feedback. The book provides insight into relationships online, and the influence of perceived 'ownership' of online spaces by specific cultural or linguistic groups. It not only increases our understanding of online interaction in a second language, but CMC in general. Based on empirical evidence, the study challenges traditional categorisations of CMC mediums, and provides important insights relating to turn-taking, code-switching, and language management online.

Abstract

This edited volume provides an overview of the latest advancements in adaptive training technology. Intelligent tutoring has been deployed for well-defined and relatively static educational domains such as algebra and geometry. However, this adaptive approach to computer-based training has yet to come into wider usage for domains that are less well defined or where student-system interactions are less structured, such as during scenario-based simulation and immersive serious games. In order to address how to expand the reach of adaptive training technology to these domains, leading experts in the field present their work in areas such as student modeling, pedagogical strategy, knowledge assessment, natural language processing and virtual human agents. Several approaches to designing adaptive technology are discussed for both traditional educational settings and professional training domains. This book will appeal to anyone concerned with educational and training technology at a professional level, including researchers, training systems developers and designers.

Abstract

The increasingly prevalent use of online- or blended-learning in schools and universities has resulted in the asynchronous online discussion forum becoming a  common means of facilitating dialogue between instructors and students, as well as between students and students, beyond the boundaries of the physical classroom.     This book provides a comprehensive review of previous research studies in order to identify the prevalent factors leading to limited student contribution in online discussion forums.   To set the research in context, nine exploratory case studies are presented and procedures to implement the solutions provided.  This book is distinctive and results-focused, unlike others tackling this topic. Using empirically-based methodologies, the book clearly and succinctly provides up-to-date infomration on a previosuly under-represented area of research. For once, the focus is squarely on student/peer facilitation rather than teacher facilitated or heavily text based discussion.
