Abstract

This is the first open practical guide for Modern TRIZ technology of effective inventive thinking. Modern TRIZ makes possible creating the innovations and inventions with systematic methods supported with effective EASyTRIZ technology and software. Vang Venming, company owner, inventor, participant of a 2-day workshop for 1,000 students at the North-Eastern Forestry University, Harbin, China: Right here, at this Modern TRIZ workshop, I came up with a new idea which improves my own patent. This is simply fabulous! I would never have believed before that it is possible! Seung-Hyen Yoo, professor of Mechanical Engineering, AJOU University, Suwon, Republic of Korea: We have known TRIZ for more than 10 years, and have successfully used it in engineering consulting and student training. And we saw a new TRIZ at lectures and workshops delivered by Professor Orloff in the Republic of Korea before experts working for SAMSUNG and other companies, and before faculty and students of several universities. Heinrich Kochs, VW expert, Hannover, Germany: Modern TRIZ makes it possible to rapidly raise young experts to the level of experienced gurus, while the gurus, in their turn, become "young" and proactive. The most important advantage of Modern TRIZ is that it accumulates, selects and transfers experience based on standardized reinventing. Gao Hong, professor, dean of Physics Department, Harbin Pedagogical University, China, participant of a 2-day workshop attended by 1,000 students: Im simply amazed by how simple and efficient Modern TRIZ models are. And now I am convinced that Modern TRIZ must be taught at our Pedagogical University and at other universities. Michael A. Orloff is a founder of Academy International for Modern TRIZ (2000), inventor and constructor of EASyTRIZ educational technology and effective educational-practical software EASyTRIZ, author of several TRIZ-textbooks, published in USA, Germany, Russia, China and Korea. He is a system development specialist and has more than 60 inventions developed individually and for well-known companies. With Modern TRIZ technology of systematic innovention, he lectures at universities and advises companies in many countries. He provides a course "Global Sustainable Innovention with Modern TRIZ" for program "Master of Science in Global Production Engineering" at Berlin University of Technology (Technische Universität Berlin).

Abstract

Charismatic Leadership in Singapore: Three Extraordinary People  Hava Dayan and Chan Kwok-bun What makes some lead while others follow? How do the great leaders keep their influence over the long term? These questions may be simple, but the answers have never been. Charisma holds important clues to the gaining and holding of power, yet it can easily be undervalued as mere personal charm. Charismatic Leadership in Singapore offers conceptual, empirical, and philosophical lenses for clarifying the nuances of the concept of charisma and gauging its impact in both public and private spheres. Its authors, Dayan and Chan, provide the much- needed context, identifying how charisma manifests in social relationships with institutions, groups and individuals, and the social, economic, political, historical, and cultural factors that make charismatic leaders desired, valued, followed. The book draws upon the lives and careers of three extraordinary citizens of Singapore (Sister Prema, community activist; Kuo Pao Kun, dramatist, theatre director, and educator; and Tay Kheng Soon, architect and pioneer in green urban design) to demonstrate the social meanings of charisma and the qualities, applicable across cultures, times and settings, that keep leaders in their positions. The book covers: Explaining charisma: macro, non-determinist, and constructivist views. Charisma in context: theory and research. Methodological issues in studying charismatic leadership. The charismatic enigma as seen through the lives of three visionary leaders. Structural constraints and alternative social/political/cultural perspectives. The agency of charismatic leadership in social construction and the transformation of meaning. As public perceptions of leaders and leadership evolve, Charismatic Leadership in Singapore makes significant reading for  leaders in business, government, and NGOs, as well as for sociologists, psychologists, business school professors, trainers, particularly those teaching or studying leadership, organizational and group behavior, social change, motivation and  action.    .

Abstract

COOP 2012 is the tenth COOP conference, marking twenty years from the first conference in 1992. In this special anniversary edition we asked researchers and practitioners to reflect on what have been the successes and the failures in designing cooperative systems, and what challenges still need to be addressed. We have come a long way in understanding the intricacies of cooperation and in designing systems that support work practices and collective activities. These advances would not have been possible without the concerted effort of contributions from a plethora of domains including CSCW, HCI, Information Systems, Knowledge Engineering, Multi-agent systems, organizational and management sciences, sociology, psychology, anthropology, ergonomics, linguistics, etc. The COOP community is going from strength to strength in developing new technologies, advancing and proposing new methodological approaches, and forging theories. From Research to Practice in the Design of Cooperative Systems: Results and Open Challenges presents theoretical contributions, empirical studies, systems development and evaluation, and innovative concepts on the following topics: Conceptual frameworks for understanding cooperative work or collective practices Guidelines for designing cooperative systems The influence of technologies (intelligent devices, mobile computing, ubiquitous computing, etc.) on cooperation Expertise, knowledge sharing and learning in cooperative work Communities and new forms of organization Innovative technological solutions and user interfaces for cooperation Methods for participatory design of cooperative systems Applications for, and studies of, social networking (including experiences in industrial contexts) Analysis of collective practices or collaborative work Reports of usage experiences and case studies.

Abstract

A curious ambiguity surrounds errors in professional working contexts: they must be avoided in case they lead to adverse (and potentially disastrous) results, yet they also hold the key to improving our knowledge and procedures. In a further irony, it seems that a prerequisite for circumventing errors is our remaining open to their potential occurrence and learning from them when they do happen. This volume, the first to integrate interdisciplinary perspectives on learning from errors at work, presents theoretical concepts and empirical evidence in an attempt to establish under what conditions professionals deal with errors at work productively—in other words, learn the lessons they contain. By drawing upon and combining cognitive and action-oriented approaches to human error with theories of adult, professional, and workplace learning this book provides valuable insights which can be applied by workers and professionals. It includes systematic theoretical frameworks for explaining learning from errors in daily working life, methodologies and research instruments that facilitate the measurement of that learning, and empirical studies that investigate relevant determinants of learning from errors in different professions. Written by an international group of distinguished researchers from various disciplines, the chapters paint a comprehensive picture of the current state of the art in research on human fallibility and (learning from) errors at work.

Abstract

Development projects that span different disciplines and groups often face problems in establishing a shared understanding of the project’s purpose, deliverables, and direction. Creating Shared Understanding in Product Development Teams: How to ‘Build the Beginning’ uses research-based cases from TC Electronic, The Red Cross, Daimler AG, and Copenhagen Living Lab to demonstrate one approach to this problem complex. It shows how prototyping specific physical artifacts can function as drivers and focal points for creating the much needed shared understanding. Encompassing both the participant’s and the facilitator’s point of view, Creating Shared Understanding in Product Development Teams: How to ‘Build the Beginning’ provides both practical examples and theoretical explanation for the process of creating shared understanding. This book provides a toolbox and a practical guide for planning, executing, and facilitating workshops. The result is a clear outline of how to facilitate the creation of physical artifacts that enables and stimulates communication between team members, users, and stakeholders in order to create shared understanding of projects.

Abstract

The Journal of Business Ethics was founded by Alex C. Michalos and Deborah C. Poff and published its first issue in March 1982. It is the most frequently cited business ethics journal in the world. The Journal has always offered a multi-disciplinary and international public forum for the discussion of issues concerning the interaction of successful business and moral virtue. Its authors and readers are primarily scholars and students in social sciences and philosophy , with special interests in the interaction of these disciplines with business or corporate responsibility. Since the field of business ethics grew simultaneously with the growth of the Journal, a collection of its most cited articles is tantamount to a collection of the articles that had the greatest influence in defining the field over its first 30 years of development. In this anniversary volume, an overview of citation classics from the Journal is presented, the 33 most frequently cited articles are reproduced and brief reflections on the impact of the Journal on the field are given from over 100 scholars who authored citation classics and/or distinguished papers, as well as those who served on the Editorial Board and/or are recognized as leaders in the field. .

Abstract

The variety and increasing availability of hypermedia information systems, which are used in stationary applications like operators’ consoles as well as mobile systems, e.g. driver information and navigation systems in automobiles form a foundation for the mediatization of the society. From the human engineering point of view this development and the ensuing increased importance of information systems for economic and private needs require careful deliberation of the derivation and application of ergonomics methods particularly in the field of information systems. This book consists of two closely intertwined parts. The first, theoretical part defines the concept of an information system, followed by an explanation of action regulation as well as cognitive theories to describe man information system interaction. A comprehensive description of information ergonomics concludes the theoretical approach. In the second, practically oriented part of this book authors from industry as well as from academic institutes illustrate the variety of current information systems taken from different fields of transportation, i.e. aviation, automotive, and railroad. The reader thus gains an overview of various applications and their context of use as well as similarities and differences in design. This does not only include a description of the different information systems but also places them in the context of the theories and models, which were presented in the first part of this book.

Abstract

Employees have personal responsibilities as well as responsibilities to their employers. They also have rights. In order to maintain their well-being, employees need opportunities to resolve conflicting obligations. Employees are often torn between the ethical obligations to fulfill both their work and non-work roles, to respect and be respected by their employers and coworkers, to be responsible to the organization while the organization is reciprocally responsible to them, to be afforded some degree of autonomy at work while attending to collaborative goals, to work within a climate of mutual employee-management trust, and to voice opinions about work policies, processes and conditions without fear of retribution. Humanistic organizations can recognize conflicts created by the work environment and provide opportunities to resolve or minimize them. This handbook empirically documents the dilemmas that result from responsibility-based conflicts. The book is organized by sources of dilemmas that fall into three major categories: individual, organizational (internal policies and procedures), and cultural (social forces external to the organization), including an introduction and a final integration of the many ways in which organizations can contribute to positive employee health and well-being. This book is aimed at both academicians and practitioners who are interested in how interventions that stem from industrial and organizational psychology may address ethical dilemmas commonly faced by employees. .

Abstract

The core belief underlying this book is that the most useful and effective models to strengthen our intelligence are system ones, developed following the logic of Systems Thinking. Such models can explore complexity, dynamics, and change, and it is the author’s view that intelligence depends on the ability to construct models of this nature. The book is designed to allow the reader not only to acquire simple information on Systems Thinking but above all to gradually learn the logic and techniques that make this way of thinking an instrument for the improvement of intelligence.  In order to aid the learning and practice of the Systems Thinking discipline, the author has abandoned a rigid formal language for a more discursive style. He writes in the first person, with an ample number of citations and critical analyses, and without ever giving in to the temptation to use formal mathematics.

Abstract

Relationships are threaded through every aspect of our lives, at home, at school, at work and at play. They are the foundation of our greatest happiness but can also be the cause of our deepest despair.  Despite how crucial they are, we may not give much thought to relationships except when they go wrong - whether this is lost intimacy, violence in our communities or toxic working environments.    This highly accessible book takes a positive psychology approach to explore why healthy relationships are important for resilience, mental health and peaceful communities, how people learn relationships and what helps in developing the positive.  There is something here for everyone in both their personal and professional lives - and for students who anticipate working with people in any capacity.  Chapters provide a wealth of evidence on promoting optimal interactions between couples, friends, parents and children and community groups. Authors address positive environments at work and at school, mentoring relationships, a new paradigm for relational leadership and how to foster tolerance between people of different faiths. Others explore what is best for children after family breakdown, how to ensure that conflict is more about learning than losing and what might help repair relationships that are damaged. Authors are academics and practitioners from across the world providing both evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence. Examples and case-studies throughout each chapter illustrate what works. Overarching themes include seeking what we have in common rather than what divides us, fostering positive communication practices, building social capital and what it means to treat each other with respect. The science of positive psychology shows that relationships can offer real meaning and sustainable fulfilment in our lives. Knowing what promotes the positive is the first step to authentic wellbeing.
