Abstract

This powerful book shows us that we are in deep denial about the magnitude of the global environmental challenges and resource constraints facing the world. Despite growing scientific consensus on major environmental threats as well as resource depletion, societies are largely continuing with business as usual, at best attempting to tinker at the margins of the problems. The authors argue that regardless of whether governments respond to the economic crisis through additional stimulus packages or reduced government spending, environmental and resource constraints will remain. The crisis wil

Abstract

Abstract

Environmental change is increasingly considered a critical topic for researchers across multiple disciplines, as well as policy makers throughout the world. Mounting evidence shows that environments in every part of the globe are undergoing tremendous human-induced change. Population growth, urbanization and the expansion of the global economy are putting increasing pressure on ecosystems around the planet. To understand the causes and consequences of environmental change, the contributors to this book employ spatial and non-spatial data, diverse theoretical perspectives and cutting edge research tools such as GIS, remote sensing and other relevant technologies. International Perspectives on Global Environmental Change brings together research from around the world to explore the complexities of contemporary, and historical environmental change. As an InTech open source publication current and cutting edge research methodologies and research results are quickly published for the academic policy-making communities. Dimensions of environmental change explored in this volume include: Climate change Historical environmental change Biological responses to environmental change Land use and land cover change Policy and management for environmental change

Abstract

In the struggle to cope with climate change, what lessons can be learnt from Earth's long history? Two leading geologists explain the important insights science is now able to give us about dramatic changes in Earth's distant past, and the delicate balance that ensures our planet is 'just right' to sustain life.

Abstract

Remote sensing is a mature technology that has been largely under- utilized in a world increasing focus on Geographic Information Systems. With the goal of encouraging a wider appreciation of what this science can achieve, Environmental Sensing: Analytical Techniques for Earth Observation introduces the scope and method of remote sensing within the context of environmental analysis and assessment. Written in easy to follow language, the book presents cutting-edge techniques and innovative applications in a manner that is accessible to the non-technical professional. Incorporating extensive use of both the environmental and remote sensing literature, this book can serve as a valuable reference as well as a useful teaching resource in and out of the classroom.  At a time when society is increasingly focused on the vexing issues surrounding global change and environmental sustainability, bringing remote sensing “down to earth” is both a timely and essential step toward enhancing environmental understanding and guide effective environmental decision making.
