Abstract

Sexual beliefs, behaviors and identities are interwoven throughout our lives, from childhood to old age. An edited collection of original empirical contributions united through its use of a distinctive, cutting-edge theoretical framework, Sex for Life critically examines sexuality across the entire lifespan. Rooted in diverse disciplines and employing a wide range of research methods, the chapters explore the sexual and social transitions that typically map to broad life stages, as well as key age-graded physiological transitions, such as puberty and menopause, while drawing on the latest developments in gender, sexuality, and life course studies.Sex for Life explores a wide variety of topics, including puberty, sexual initiation, coming out, sexual assault, marriage/life partnering, disability onset, immigration, divorce, menopause, and widowhood, always attending to the social locations – including gender, race, ethnicity, and social class – that shape, and are shaped by, sexuality. The empirical work collected in Sex for Life ultimately speaks to important public policy issues, such as sex education, aging societies, and the increasing politicization of scientific research. Accessibly written, the contributions capture the interplay between individual lives and the ever-changing social-historical context, facilitating new insight not only into people’s sexual lives, but also into ways of studying them, ultimately providing a fresh, new perspective on sexuality.

Abstract

How do women who have survived traumatic sexual violence cope with and manage their everyday lives? Karolin Eva Kappler analyses the everyday life of victims of sexual violence, combining the normalcy of their daily life with the overwhelming experience of rape and sexual abuse. Based on a qualitative study, the author detects five patterns which characterize the victims’ everyday coping practices and strategies. The grounded analysis of the interview material shows the fragility of the victims’ lives, depending on paradoxes which reduce their freedom of choice and which explain the individual and social invisibility of sexual violence. The book is valuable reading for academics and practitioners working in the fields of sociology, psychology, medicine, social work, and education.

Abstract

Feminism and Migration: Cross-Cultural Engagements is a rich, original, and diverse collection on the intersections of feminism and migration in western and non-western contexts.  This book explores the question: does migration empower women? Through wide-ranging topics on theorizing feminism in migration, contesting identities and agency, resistance and social justice, and religion for change, well-known and emerging scholars provide in-depth analysis of how social, cultural, political, and economic forces shape new modalities and perspectives among women upon migration. It highlights the centrality of the various meanings and interpretations of feminism(s) in the lives of immigrant and migrant women in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Eastern Europe, France, Greece, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Papua New Guinea, Spain, and the United States. The well-researched chapters explore the ways in which feminism and migration across cultures relate to women’s experiences in host societies --- as women, wives, mothers, exiles, nuns, and workers---and the avenues of interactions for change. Cross-cultural engagements point to the convergence and even disjunctures between (im)migrant and non-immigrant women that remain unrecognized in contemporary mainstream discourses on migration and feminism.

Abstract

Sexuality and aging: Clinical perspectives Jennifer Hillman There are two primary stereotypes of sexuality and aging.  One is found in the prowling cougars and elder Romeos of TV and film. The other is lonely, ill, depressed, and above all, sexless. The truth mainly lies between these extremes, reflecting a diversity of experience and behaviors to match a growing and dynamic senior population. Sexuality and Aging: Clinical Perspectives assembles the most up-to-date information on the spectrum of middle-aged and older people’s sex-related concerns, from HIV to ED, from body image problems to dating after 50.  This timely volume equips professionals to answer questions more accurately and help clients navigate the multiple changes and challenges that accompany aging.  In-depth analysis, empirical findings, and case studies offer a clear picture of what clinicians can expect as the baby-boom population grows older. And the author provides helpful advice for clinicians seeking a comfort level for discussing sexual matters in practice. Included in the coverage: An overview of sexuality among middle-aged and older adults including historical approaches and current research methodologies. Specific chapters focusing upon men’s and women’s concerns. The impact of prescription and over the counter medicines on sexual function. Sexuality in the contexts of disability, dementia, and long-term care. The increasing prevalence of HIV, AIDS, and other STDs among adults over 50. LGBT issues and cross-cultural perspectives. Sexuality and end-of-life issues. Sexuality and Aging: Clinical Perspectives is vital, informative reading for therapists, counselors, graduate students, and anyone working with middle-aged and older adults, including the generalist practitioner as well as the specialist in gerontology or sexuality.  .

Abstract

Key Demographics in Retirement Risk Management argues that the weakening of public and employer-sponsored social safety nets in several countries will permanently increase pre-retirees’ risk-anxiety and create pressure towards readjustment of their expectations about the quality of their lives in retirement. The result will be to raise the priority of achieving effective comprehensive retirement related risk management.  This achievement requires an emphasis upon the cascading of linked risks, and careful attention to the optimization of scarce resources used to manage those linked risks. Professional financial and retirement planning advisors comprise a key source of help. This book develops new knowledge concerning the factors that help to explain three important aspects of access to these professional advisors. The results of this analysis are used to illustrate the process of identifying distinctive population segments, key demographics, on the basis of multiple population attributes treated simultaneously.  The illustration is further extended with an identification of distinctive population segments relative to performance on a composite indicator of the conduct of multiple retirement risk management activities.  The book also discusses implications of the pattern of gender differences in preparedness to address retirement’s challenges, highlighting subgroups of women in which inadequate preparedness is pronounced. .

Abstract

As countless love songs, movies, and self-help books attest, men and women have long sought different things. The result? Seemingly inevitable conflict. Yet we belong to the most cooperative species on the planet. Isn't there a way we can use this capacity to achieve greater harmony and equality between the sexes? In The War of the Sexes, Paul Seabright argues that there is--but first we must understand how the tension between conflict and cooperation developed in our remote evolutionary past, how it shaped the modern world, and how it still holds us back, both at home and at work. Drawing on biology, sociology, anthropology, and economics, Seabright shows that conflict between the sexes is, paradoxically, the product of cooperation. The evolutionary niche--the long dependent childhood--carved out by our ancestors requires the highest level of cooperative talent. But it also gives couples more to fight about. Men and women became experts at influencing one another to achieve their cooperative ends, but also became trapped in strategies of manipulation and deception in pursuit of sex and partnership. In early societies, economic conditions moved the balance of power in favor of men, as they cornered scarce resources for use in the sexual bargain. Today, conditions have changed beyond recognition, yet inequalities between men and women persist, as the brains, talents, and preferences we inherited from our ancestors struggle to deal with the unpredictable forces unleashed by the modern information economy. Men and women today have an unprecedented opportunity to achieve equal power and respect. But we need to understand the mixed inheritance of conflict and cooperation left to us by our primate ancestors if we are finally to escape their legacy.

Abstract

Queer Masculinities: A Critical Reader in Education makes a substantial contribution to contemporary scholarship on gender and sexuality studies in education. Collectively the essays in this volume illuminate a broad range of queer practices and representations of masculinity in education, demonstrating that any serious study of masculinity must consider the theoretical and political contributions that the concept of queer masculinities makes to a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of masculinity itself. In addition, Queer Masculinities encourages new approaches to educational theory and practice—while contributing more generally to knowledge production in the fields of critical masculinity studies and queer studies—by examining the complex interplay between queer masculinities and education.  The essays range from empirical studies to theoretical reflections, and address themselves to three separate educational realms: the K-12 level, the collegiate level, and the pedagogy of cultural production. Some of the essays focus on the disorienting presence of queer masculine student and teacher bodies in the K-12 or college classroom, and on the effects of queer performances of masculinity on classroom dynamics and on processes of learning. Others reflect on the challenges of actively queering pedagogical practice and research methodologies, and on its practical and theoretical rewards. Still others emphasize the cultural pedagogy of representations of queer masculinities in television, documentary film, and the novel, with special attention to the transformative possibilities inherent in those representations that challenge gender norms, or that make them strange or incoherent. Indeed,  for many of the authors, the performative complexities of dislocating, “unmapping,” or “stealing” masculinity form the backdrop for an impassioned reflection on the cultural and pedagogical necessity of such an endeavor. In all, this volume’s breadth and detail make it a landmark publication in the study of queer masculinities, in critical masculinity studies as a whole, and in educational theory and practice.
