Depuis Platon, l'interaction avec l'image a joué un rôle décisif dans la formulation de l'idée même de philosophie. En retraçant les moments clés de la réflexion philosophique sur l'image dans la pensée, Dennis J. Schmidt développe la question de l'image en se concentrant sur la peinture, où l'image attire le plus clairement l'attention sur elle-même en tant qu'image. En se concentrant sur Heidegger et l'œuvre de Paul Klee, Schmidt poursuit sa réflexion sur des questions plus vastes liées à la relation entre le mot, l'image et la vérité. En explorant d'autres manières de penser la vérité par le biais du mot et de l'image, Schmidt montre comment la forme d'art peut en effet posséder la capacité de changer ses spectateurs.
