Bankette waren ein wichtiger Bestandteil der antiken Herrscherrepräsentation. In dieser Funktion werden sie hier erstmals aus den Quellen rekonstruiert, systematisch dargestellt und analysiert. Dabei geht es auch um Fragen, ob es einen genetischen Zusammenhang zwischen hellenistischem 'deipnon basilikon' und kaiserlichem convivium gibt und ob es sich bei diesen Veranstaltungen um einheitlich strukturierte Institutionen handelt. Es eröffnen sich Einblicke nicht nur in die 'Tischkultur' bei König und Kaiser, sondern auch in die Erwartungen sowie in die Art und Weise, in der das unterschiedliche Selbstverständnis der Herrscher in rituelle Lebensformen ihres Hofes bzw. Hauses überführt wurde. Banquettes were an important part of the representation of classical rulers. In this function they are reconstructed from the sources, systematically presented and analysed here for the first time. In the process, the question of the possible existence of a genetic relation between the Hellenic 'deipnon basilikon' and emporer's convivium is considered, and also whether these events constitute uniformly structured institutions. It provides insights not only into the 'table customs' of kings and emperors, but also into the expectations of and the manner in which different rulers self-conceptions were manifested in the ritual life of their courts and houses.

La problématique de la rémunération occupe une place centrale dans les relations entre employeur et travailleur. This book explores the accounts of communal meals and the metaphorical use of food and drink language in the narrative world of the Gospel of John. It argues that the Johannine community regularly gathered for communal meals in which the food and drink on the menu would have taken on a spiritual significance far exceeding the physical sustenance. The study employs a socio-rhetorical methodology and consequently moves from text to context. It tentatively describes the texts’ influence on the formation of early Christian identity and suggests that the Johannine meal accounts provide a way to imagine the demographic composition of the community and its historical context.

In the aftermath of the French Revolution, the role of the monarchy in Western Europe was redefined. Together with the absolutist sovereigns, the historian’s interest in courts and court life in the nineteenth century seems to have vanished.This book investigates what happened to the institution of the monarchy in the nineteenth century. More specifically, it examines whether the nineteenth-century Belgian monarchs can be described as influential, or even powerful. The volume also deals with another hiatus in history writing, namely food at nineteenth-century courts. The author addresses these two issues by examining the Belgian king and queen’s dinner guests, as well as the food that was served at the palace. She considers questions such as who was invited, who got to share a table, how did the guest lists evolve over time, was the food adjusted according to the guests and how did the food evolve?A social network analysis of the dinner guests and a qualitative analysis of the court food are used as tools to tackle these questions. In this way, this book deals with issues that touch upon the very core of society’s development: power, hierarchies, status, imitation, segregation and distinction.
