De titel van dit boek doet ongetwijfeld een belletje rinkelen bij iedereen die betrokken is op het jeugdwerk in Vlaanderen. Het beeld van de ‘witte’, ‘middenklasse’ jeugdbeweging die aangesproken wordt op haar (on)toegankelijkheid is alvast niet onbekend. Wie meer wil weten over ‘jeugdwerk en sociale uitsluiting’ is met dit boek aan het goede adres. De auteur verwerkt in dit boek secundaire data en eigen onderzoeksmateriaal, studies uit eigen land en uit het buitenland. Dit leidt in eerste instantie tot een genuanceerde kijk op het waarom en waartoe van het toegankelijkheidsstreven en de ‘praktische’ problemen die hierbij opduiken. Maar dit boek brengt meer dan een gedetailleerde analyse van het toegankelijkheidsvraagstuk. Er worden standpunten ingenomen. Centraal staat de these dat men het moet hebben over mogelijkheden en aspiraties van concrete kinderen en jongeren eerder dan over ontoegankelijkheid (van het jeugdwerk) en non-participatie (aan het jeugdwerk). Deze these wordt gestaafd met bevindingen uit een ‘multiple case study’. De zorgvuldig neergeschreven studie van het doen en laten van 5 jeugdwerkinitiatieven in een Gentse buurt doet twijfelen aan vermeende ‘best practices’ binnen het jeugdwerk en zelfs aan de belangrijkheid van het spel dat men jeugdwerk noemt. Letterlijk: een uitdagend boek voor geëngageerde jeugdwerkers… en sociaal werkers.

Reporting on a multi-disciplinary project this book seeks to reconstruct the history since the last glaciation of the area between and including the middle reaches of the Rivers Swale and Ure in Yorkshire. Included in this history are both natural changes, determined from studies of landforms and sediments, and human-induced changes, recorded in archaeological and geo-archaeological records. The work is set in the context of previous research and pre-existing knowledge, outlined in an introductory chapter. Key methods used include geomorphological mapping and the study of sediment exposures, both aimed at reconstructing the final phases of glaciation and then the melting of the ice and its replacement by the post-glacial rivers, as well as the use of fossil materials to reconstruct the post-glacial record, both of natural change and increasing anthropogenic impacts.
