This volume shows the progress and achievements of Iran up to the 1940s within the setting of her ancient history and her strategic position in the world today. The author discusses Iran's vital position as the dividing line between the East and the West and how Iran drew from and contributed to both these cultures, without losing her own individuality. It is this cultural influence, the author argues, rather than any political strength that has enabled her to survive. Much of the information is taken from sources not available in English or any other language other than Persian.

As an Iranian American poet, Roger Sedarat fuses Western and Eastern traditions to reinvent the classicalPersian form of the ghazal. For its humor as well as its spirituality, the poems in this collection can perhapsbest be described as "Wallace Stevens meets Rumi." Perhaps most striking is the poet's use of the ancient ghazal form in the tradition of the classical masters like Hafez and Rumi to politically challenge the Islamic Republic of Iran's continual crackdown on protesters. Not since the late Agha Shahid Ali has a poet translated the letter as well as the spirit of this form into Engl

Studies on Ctesias’ Persika are much in demand. Scholars consult the history of the sequence of the three Near Eastern world empires in 23 books on the history of the Ancient Near East, and as a source for Graeco-Persian relations and Greek memorial culture of the 4th century B.C. Others are interested in the varied Greek images of the East, in the origin of the concept of „Oriental Despotism“ or in the powerful pattern of a sequence of world empires, and thus come across the work of the Cnidian doctor. Finally, the Persika – whose genre affiliation is still as controversial as the author’s role as an eye witness – also figure prominently in the debates on the origins of the Greek novel. It was a central concern of the conference at Salzau Castle near Kiel in May 2006 to gain new access to this fascinating work. The conference’s contributions which are presented in this volume tread new paths by paying particular attention to Ctesias’ precursors and contemporaries, and to the contemporary oriental tradition. Also, single parts as well as the main themes of the Persika are examined more closely.

When it was originally published this book broke new ground in presenting one continuous narrative of the history of Christians in Persia from the second century A.D to the 1970s. The material gathered here was previously only to be found in obscure books, manuscripts and foreign periodicals. Christians in Persia shows the intricate history of the period concerned; the personalities of the rulers and the ruled; the difficult task of the missionaries; their successes and failures and the consequences of their efforts. All this is related to the wider history of the country and t

The impact of Persian life and literature upon Victorian England was tremendous. It found its public demonstration in the visit of the Shah, but the number of men of letters who turned to the Persian classics for inspiration were as numerous as they were great: William Jones, Charles Murray, Edward Browne, George Borrow, Richard Burton, Edward Palmer and, of course, Fitzgerald, translator of the Rubaiyat.

As Iran's nuclear program evolves, U.S. decision makers will confront a series of critical policy choices involving complex considerations and policy trade-offs. These policy choices could involve dissuading Iran from developing nuclear weapons; deterring Iran from using its nuclear weapons, if it were to acquire them; and reassuring U.S. regional partners. The U.S. Air Force will need to prepare to carry out whatever policies are chosen.
