Avienus' version of Aratos' didatic poem 'Phainomena', written around AD 360, is notorious for its difficulty. Reworking earlier didactic literature, Avienus extended or shortened the original versions as he pleased. This commentary includes detailed information on astronomical history and the mythology of the constellations; it tries to explain both the poet's technique and his often baroque text. Avienus has an individual approach to the use of epic formulae and literature sources. The analysis makes very clear that this pagan writer is an underestimated poeta doctus of an era in which Christianity hat long been dominant. Die Arat-Bearbeitung des spätantiken Autors Avien (verfasst um 360 n. Chr.) ist bekannt für ihre Sperrigkeit. Als Bearbeiter früherer Lehrgedichte hat sich Avien die Freiheit genommen, seine Vorlage nach Belieben zu erweitern oder zu kürzen. Der vorliegende Kommentar enthält detaillierte Informationen zur Astronomiegeschichte, zur Mythologie der Sternbilder und versucht, die dichterische Technik und den oft barock wirkenden Text zu erläutern. Kennzeichnend ist vor allem Aviens selbständiger Umgang mit epischen Versatzstücken und der großen Menge an Quellenmaterial. Die Einzelbetrachtungen der Untersuchung lassen eines erkennen: Der Heide Avien ist ein vielfach unterschätzter poeta doctus einer Epoche, in der das Christentum längst die Oberhand gewonnen hat.

L'histoire culturelle est à la mode. Certains s'en agacent, certains mettent en doute son existence. On parle ici de flou conceptuel, là d'impérialisme. Comment, en effet, rendre compte d'un champ d'investigation qui s'étend des arts plastiques aux arts martiaux, de la sensibilité aux parfums à la spiritualité de Saint Louis ? Cet ouvrage apporte quelques réponses simples à ces questions complexes : oui, il est facile de définir l'histoire culturelle – comme une « histoire sociale des représentations ». Oui, il n'est pas difficile d'en reconstituer les origines. On peut en préciser les objets, dans leur cohérence : la cohérence d'un regard sur les sources, sur leur mode de questionnement, qui est, par là, questionnement du monde.

À l'heure où, partout dans le monde, les peuples se tournent vers la république démocratique, mais à l'heure aussi où l'Europe hésite à bâtir une république commune, que sait-on véritablement de l'histoire de la république européenne ? Est-elle issue, comme l'affirment nombre d'historiens anglais, des cités antiques et médiévales ? Est-elle née, comme le voudrait un préjugé francocentrique tenace, de la Révolution française de 1789 ? En contournant ces deux généalogies, trop longue ou trop courte, la philosophe Blandine Kriegel retrace ici une histoire originale et inédite de la république moderne. Celle-ci naît en effet de la rencontre inattendue des traditions des républiques de cité et de celle du droit politique moderne de l'État qui permet à l'insurrection des Pays-Bas néerlandais de vaincre le despotisme impérial de Philippe II. Mieux, tous les États-nations européens, au premier rang desquels la France et l'Angleterre, contribuent à sa victoire. Mieux encore, le droit politique neuf de cette première république d'État qui s'affiche dans les discours de Guillaume d'Orange, véritable « Prince moderne », comme dans les Déclarations d'indépendance des Provinces-Unies, est rédigé par des Français, protestants et « politiques ». L'épilogue de cette histoire culmine avec le « Grand Dessein » d'Henri IV et de Sully de construire une république européenne… devant laquelle nous trébucherons encore. La république moderne, une idée européenne ? Ou quand le retour sur le passé peut permettre de frayer la voie à l'avenir.
