Since before the second world war, Le Corbusier has been in search of a place for putting his own architectural theory into practice outside the closed stagnation of Europe. And it was India that has been chosen, after WWII, to become his new horizon. In 1950 he was commissioned to design the city of Chandigarh, the new capital for the State of Punjab. This huge project led him to work on a number of smaller ones in India. The Sarabhai House in Ahmedabad is an example of these projects done between 1951 and 1955.

In his 'white phase' of the twenties and thirties, he insisted that his buildings be photographed with a modern automobile in the foreground. Le Corbusier moved beyond the theoretical in 1936, entering (with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret) an automobile design competition, submitting plans for 'a minimalist vehicle for maximum functionality,' the Voiture Minimum. Geert Bekaert (1928-2016) is Belgian and is the most influential and most productive architecture critic in the Dutch-speaking area. Since the fifties, he has been involved in every possible theoretical, critical or cultural debate on architecture. In this book a broad selection of his writings is for the first time ever presented to an English-speaking audience. The book consists of four divisions: in part 1, theoretical essays are collected. In part 2, Bekaert writes on the oeuvres of both young and old Belgian architects. Part 3 presents shorter criticism of contemporary architecture. Part 4 presents a selection of his writings on international architects, such as Rem Koolhaas, Frank Gehry, Le Corbusier and Aldo Rossi. Each text is accompanied by insightful illustrations, often pictures taken by the author himself and previously unpublished.

Le quartier de Firminy-Vert, près de Saint-Étienne (Loire), est rapidement devenu célèbre, par son ampleur, comme exemple de l'urbanisme corbuséen. Dessiné par les architectes Charles Delfante, André Sive et MArcel Roux, il a été conçu à partir de 1953 selon les principes de la Chartes d'athènes. Le Corbusier, qui a pesé sur la configuration du site, y a construit plusieurs équipements, une Unité d'habitation et enfin l'église Saint-Pierre, achevée en 2006.
