This book is a rigorous introduction to the characterisation of composite materials by means of ultrasonic waves. Composites are treated here not simply as uniform media, but as inhomogeneous layered anisotropic media with internal structure characteristic of composite laminates. The objective here is to concentrate on exposing the singular behavior of ultrasonic waves as they interact with layered, anisotropic materials, materials which incorporate those structural elements typical of composite laminates.

In this book, we present a dozen state of the art developments for ultrasound imaging, for example, hardware implementation, transducer, beamforming, signal processing, measurement of elasticity and diagnosis. The editors would like to thank all the chapter authors, who focused on the publication of this book.

Chest sonography is an established procedure in the stepwise imaging diagnosis of pulmonary and pleural disease. It is the method of choice to distinguish between solid and liquid lesions and allows the investigator to make an unequivocal diagnosis without exposing the patient to costly and stressful procedures. Since the second edition of this book, the value of chest sonography has been further demonstrated in many new studies, especially with respect to the application of portable ultrasound stethoscope systems. The new, third edition of Chest Sonography presents the state of the art in chest investigation by means of ultrasonography and has been updated to take into account the results of the 1st International Consensus Conference on Pleural & Lung Ultrasound. The numerous excellent illustrations and the compact text provide concise and easy-to-assimilate information about the diagnostic procedure. Basic aspects such as indications, investigative techniques, and image artifacts are detailed in separate chapters, and entirely new chapters have been included on emergency ultrasound of the chest and pediatric chest sonography.

As a new and rapidly growing science, the applications of ultrasound methods in environmental technology hold a promising future. Compared to conventional methods, ultrasonication can bring several benefits such as being environmentally friendly (no toxic chemical are used or produced), low cost, and compact, allowing on-site treatment. Besides an overview featuring the background behind ultrasonic technology, this brief summarizes the main studies and innovations reported in recent research that has utilized ultrasound methods in environmental analysis, water, and sludge treatment, soil and sediment remediation to air purification.

Deep pelvic endometriosis is one of the most severe expressions of a disease that may involve all the pelvic organs – bladder, ureters, rectosigmoid colon – causing debilitating symptoms and leading to impaired quality of life in young women. The chapters cover both diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this disease. The central role of diagnostic imaging in surgical decision making is highlighted, as well as the difficulties involved in careful planning of surgical treatment, and special attention is paid to minimally invasive techniques. The paramount importance of a multidisciplinary team, involving the expertise of radiologists, gastroenterologists, and psychologists, as well as the skills of the gynecologist, urologist, and colorectal surgeon is underlined throughout the text.

Imaging is increasingly used in patients suspected of having acute appendicitis in order to reduce the rates of perforation and negative appendectomy and to detect alternative diagnoses. As many of these patients are young, radiation dose is of particular concern. Numerous studies have therefore investigated reduction of the radiation dose delivered by CT and whether ultrasound may be a preferable option, depending on age and gender. It is also recognized that MRI can be invaluable in certain patients, such as pregnant women, though it is difficult to use in emergency settings. This book is a comprehensive account of imaging of acute appendicitis and other appendiceal diseases. Background information is first provided on clinical presentation, perforation and negative appendectomy rates, and treatment options. The role of each imaging modality is then considered separately in adults and children with suspected acute appendicitis. Many high-quality illustrations are included, and detailed information is provided on appropriate protocols and radiation saving. Further chapters addresses the spontaneously resolving and chronic appendicitis as well as other appendiceal lesions, and review the findings of evidence-based medicine and cost-effectiveness analyses. Emergency physicians, pediatricians, surgeons, and radiologists will all find this book to be an excellent source of information and guidance.
