Du 21 octobre 2011 au 18 mars 2012, la Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, en collaboration avec l'Institut des hautes études scientifiques (IHES) et en partenariat avec l'UNESCO, organise l'exposition Mathématiques, un dépaysement soudain, guidée par un objectif : donner la parole aux mathématiques et aux mathématiciens en ouvrant un dialogue avec des artistes majeurs de la création contemporaine. Parmi les très nombreux mathématiciens et scientifiques qui ont contribué à la création de l'exposition, huit spécialistes en ont été les maîtres d'œuvre : Sir Michael Atiyah, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Alain Connes, Nicole El Karoui, Misha Gromov, Giancarlo Lucchini, Cédric Villani et Don Zagier. Sollicités pour leur capacité exceptionnelle d'écoute, de curiosité et d'émerveillement, neuf artistes ayant tous déjà exposé à la Fondation Cartier les y accueillent : Jean-Michel Alberola, Raymond Depardon et Claudine Nougaret, Takeshi Kitano, David Lynch, Beatriz Milhazes, Patti Smith, Hiroshi Sugimoto et Tadanori Yokoo, avec le concours de Pierre Buffin et de son équipe (BUF). Fruit d'une collaboration étroite avec tous les intervenants du projet, le catalogue Mathématiques, un dépaysement soudain, constitue un ouvrage indispensable pour approfondir les problématiques liées à l'exposition. Pensé comme un espace d'échange, le catalogue propose aux mathématiciens et aux artistes de mener une réflexion commune sur les grandes questions que soulèvent les mathématiques. Des entretiens croisés permettent de confronter les points de vue de chacun et de développer les sujets abordés dans l'exposition. Mêlant textes, questionnaires et portraits, l'ouvrage montre la diversité de la pensée mathématique, qu'elle soit énoncée par des scientifiques ou des artistes, et souligne l'importance de la création dans ce domaine. Le livre fait également la part belle à la transcription visuelle des mathématiques à travers les contributions des artistes impliqués dans l'exposition. Le livre inclut également un CD inédit de la bande son de l'exposition qui réunit les collaborations de David Lynch et de Patti Smith. Ouvrage exigeant et accessible à la fois, le catalogue Mathématiques, un dépaysement soudain offre au lecteur un parcours atypique dans le monde des mathématiques et en dévoile toute la beauté poétique.

Endocrine disruption is an expanding field due to the numerous chemicals involved and, as evidenced more recently, the variety of homeostatic systems that they can alter throughout life. The gathering of experts from all over the world should help to identify health disorders that are possibly or likely related to exposure to endocrine disrupters. The research needs have been discussed as well as recommendations prioritizing target groups and following the precautionary principle.
