Dorothea M. Salzer studies the use of biblical quotations and allusions in the Hebrew and Aramaic magical texts which were found among the manuscripts from the Cairo Genizah. Although allusions to the Hebrew Bible are extant and important in almost all of these magical texts, they have never before been subjected to a thorough and comprehensive analysis. Against the backdrop of the theory of intertextuality, Dorothea Salzer describes how the authors of these texts used biblical quotations and other allusions for magical and rhetorical purposes. She explains the significance of these allusions for understanding the strucuture and meaning of the medieval magical texts. The appendix lists the biblical quotations/allusions referred to in the analysed texts which all date from the 10th to the 16th century..

Despite changes in sovereignty and in religious thought, certain aspects of Iranian culture and identity have persisted since antiquity. Drawing on an exploration of history, religion and literature to define Iranian cultural identity and link the Persian past with more recent cultural and political phenomena, this book examines the history of Iran from its ancient roots to the Islamic period, paying particular attention to pre-Islamic Persian religions and their influence upon later Muslim practices and precepts in Iran. The Death of Sacred Texts draws attention to a much neglected topic in the study of sacred texts: the religious and ritual attitudes towards texts which have become old and damaged and can no longer be used for reading practices and in religious worship. This book approaches religious texts and scriptures by focusing on their physical properties and the dynamic interactions of devices and habits that lie beneath and within a given text.. In the last decades a growing body of research studies has directed attention to the multiple uses and ways people encounter written texts and how they make t

How the West Was Won contains articles in three main areas of the humanities. It focuses on various aspects of literary imagination, with essays ranging from Petrarch to Voltaire; on the canon, with essays on western history as one of shifting cultural horizons and ideals, and including censorship; and on the Christian Middle Ages, when an interesting combination of religion and culture stimulated the monastic and intellectual experiments of Anselm of Canterbury and Peter Abelard. The volume is held together by the method of persistent questioning, in the tradition of the western church father and icon of the self Augustine, to discover what the values are that drive the culture of the West: where do they come from and what is their future? This volume is a Festschrift for Burcht Pranger of the University of Amsterdam.
